I'd say that Crisis on Infinite Earth's defined Supergirl pretty well, and removed Kara from the picture and replaced her with Matrix. Now while that might seem like a terrible idea, it wasn't completely awful.

First off, Superman being the last child of Krypton schtick was annoying, but it did open a door to great possibilities for both Supergirl and Superman. Supergirl got a character change to Matrix, and Superman, well... I don't know what to say about Superman. Haven't read enough. But the Matrix idea was interesting, and if I recall how one of the oldest Supergirl fans said it was, people were actually excited when Peter David's run was announced. Who wouldn't be? The guy was a legend back then. Still is to some degree. But... Most of the run sucked.

I'd also like to say that Sterling Gates' run on Supergirl was the first big Supergirl return to great quality.
