As to be expected, both the JL and JLD stories were all setup to the larger story arcs these new incarnations of each respective team will go through over the next half year or so. The JL one showed that Ollie and Dinah have been reinstated into the Justice League following Death Metal and the restored memories that have come from the ripples in reality that event caused. Furthermore, Oliver wants to shake things up. He feels that the Justice League has been composed of the same main members for so long, even on-and-off, that the way they approach issues has become too streamlined. He wants to add new members with new perspectives.
We get a peak at two of the characters we know will be joining, even if the Leaguers don't yet know—Black Adam and Naomi. Black Adam is a benevolent ruler in his home nation, liked by his constituents. The way the League treats him in this first issue of the new run demonstrates that they find fault with him, even if he has shied away from villainy. Meanwhile, he does treat them with a similar amount of respect that they show him. We see Naomi, who is as public with her powers and identity as Superman has recently been. We learn of a pending threat, the threat that wiped out the residents of Naomi's home earth, and how it has set its sights on Prime Earth. Hyppoltya does not yet show up, even though we know she will be part of the new roster.
Over in the JLD side of things, we see Constantine and Zatanna visiting a location on a day that has been prophesied by two groups foretelling two different things. Turns out, both of them were true, and the result led to the two of them standing before a naked Jason Blood, seemingly drenched in, well, blood. Concurrently, Merlin returns to his old home base and kills the woman intended to be the 13th Knight of the Roundtable, Elnara Rashtu. I saw her guarding the sword Caliburnus (Excalibur), and I thought she seemed really nice. I reckon she may have been, and perhaps that was the problem. As, I'm sad to say, we will no longer be seeing her, even though I was excitingly putting her name to my memory when she first appeared in the story, as I had anticipated her becoming a more significant character later on. Funny how that stuff shakes out sometimes. Oh, and that sword? Don't count on its power any longer, sadly.
Of the two stories, I think the setup for JLD compelled me more. It was fairly cohesive and didn't rely on much prior reading. I'm looking forward to Detective Chimp and Ragman appearing in upcoming issues as the JLD officially solidifies again.
