What do you think about this comic?
Btw, she also appeared in Infinite Frontier #0, so I'd suggest reading that.
I have not read the book; but I find ironic that the newest Wonder Girl has already been given a solo whereas Donna Troy has never gotten her own title and Cassandra Sandsmark has only starred in a mini despite being older characters.
Poor, poor Donna.
^ Yeah. But at least they give Donna some spotlight in Teen Titans Academy.
I mean, Donna had a miniseries. It was just that it had a longer name: The Return of Donna Troy. Cassie also had a one-shot. That said, both Cassie and Donna were created and swiftly pushed into being “team characters.” While I’m sure Yara may find herself on some sort of team eventually, it seems that DC is trying to establish her as a solo hero first and foremost, a different approach to the Wonder Girl legacy. I find this interesting. I don’t think it’s disrespectful toward Donna or Cassie, though. I think it’s just a matter of using the methods that may best result in the game plan they have envisioned. Besides, if you consider Future State a “beta test” of Yara’s character concept, then I’m sure she must have “scored” well enough with the right audiences that DC felt confident enough that she could handle her own solo title, at least for a while. It helps that a big name like Joelle Jones is on the project. The art is wonderful.
As for the issue itself, the length seemed normal, and I didn’t particularly find her personality “childish,” although I can understand how that viewpoint may come from. See, she has confidence, which is good, but in being so upfront, she ends up thinking herself fairly wise for her age, which can sometimes be a bit naive. That said, her character seemed three-dimensional. I believed she could be a real person based on her dialogue and the like.
Even if she’s not a superhero yet, she has a heroic instinct, which is good to see. She isn’t very over-the-top about how her ethics motivate her to act either. She sees a situation and reacts to it in a manner that seems natural to her, which happens to be what many of us would call heroic. I think that’s good. It fees sincere.
Having the whole first five pages be a flashback scene that Yara seemingly herself doesn’t recall was an interesting choice. It really emphasized and created a sense of dramatic irony from the beginning. Having the three factions notice Yara enter her homeland (which somehow triggers something mysterious?) was neat, especially given how parallel the scenarios were. Hera seems antagonistic, like she has a malicious agenda. Nubia is going to try the direct but gentle approach of using words. Queen Faruka is sending Amazons to kill Yara to stop her from doing something or becoming involved in something that could put everyone in danger. The narrative possibilities of those dynamics could be fun to explore. I look forward to seeing how that aspect of it continues, especially after this initial storyline is over.
The lettering was really solid. I liked the type faces used to indicate settings.
Kevin the social media junkie is someone I hope isn’t recurring but someone I imagine could easily become recurring. Oh well. We’ll see. I don’t love that archetype is all. I’m sure it’ll work well for the story, though.
I reckon we’ll see how Yara escapes this siren-like threat next issue.
I do not care for this version of Wonder Woman She's so childish she can't wait in the line and then steals a coin from someone waiting for the ferry across the River Styx.
To be fair, the souls had eternity to wait in line for the ferry. She had a more pressing time crunch.
So far, she hasn’t shown that level of impatience as her younger self, if we disregard the Future State possible future.
Ah yes, unlike Cassie Sandsmark, who was totally not childish and didn't steal the Gauntlet of Atlas and Sandals of Hermes a good five minutes after meeting Wonder Woman.
How old is yara?
In Prime Earth? Idk but she's definitely a teenager.
In Future State? It looks like she's already an adult.
What's your Estimate? I think she's in the 17-18 range.
