Happy anniversary, Man of Steel!

Today marks the 8th anniversary of Man of Steel, Superman's first solo movie since Superman Returns and the beginning of the DC Extended Universe.

Now, a lot of people disliked the movie, and that's perfectly fine, but this movie means a lot to me for a lot of personal reasons. First of all, like I said, it was Superman's first solo movie since Superman Returns, meaning that he was the main character of his own story, without having to share the spotlight with another superhero.

Second, I thought this movie was much better than the comic books at the time (the New 52 weren't all too kind to Superman, if you ask me) and I do believe that it did a good job at modernizing Superman and understanding what it means to be a man who could change everything.

A very enjoyable movie. The characterization is off on a couple of the characters, Jonathan Kent especially, but was still capable of getting invested in the characters. Zod is literally my favorite villain in the DCEU. Henry Cavill seems comfortable in the role, and even though he isn't given much to work with, I understand why they cast him from his real-life mannerisms. Krypton looked neat, and I was interested to potentially see more. And with the exception of Zod, I thought the deaths of main characters were well-handled and done with respect. I definitely would have watched a sequel, and it would have probably been better than the upcoming reboot. (AKA my pitch for an Icon movie, but with Superman.)

This is like celebrating the anniversary of Franz Ferdinand’s assassination. I mean, we all thought WWI was bad enough, but then WWII resulted from it as well.

Saying it's better than the New 52 Superman isn't as big a compliment as you think it is. That's, like, a bit of Morrison that's nice, Perez who had to deal with Morrison, and then Lobdell who churned out mediocrity on command.

But all three of them wrote a better Superman than Snyder ever will.

Man of Steel shouldn't be celebrated because it was the first Superman solo movie since Superman Returns (wait, did he even have non-solo movies?). It should be celebrated because it made Returns look good. Likeable Supes, funny Jimmy, detestable Luthor (doubly so in hindsight), and somehow still a better Lois. Bosworth was terrible but Adams was dragged down by a bad script and a complete lack of chemistry with that plank Henry Cavill.

We didn't know how lucky we were at the time.
