With his freedom he soon discovered his bond to Jason was symbiotic and he was fading away, a final precaution of Merlin’s spell. Etrigan had to reunite with Blood to survive, in doing so he must maintain a fragile alliance. If he was too dangerous Jason would be reluctant to ever let him free. Thus, Etrigan must be content to sate his base urges on fighting mutual foes when his keeper is desperate enough to summon him.
