Elements of New Earth merged with Prime Earth? Continuity has been a mess for a while.

Really? That's it? Actually, I think this one's on me. Haven't read Death Metal or Infinite Frontier yet, but I'd heard about the changing canon. I think I'll go read those, and come back if I still have questions.

I've not read much either, but I think probably Convergence/Rebirth onward it's been wet cement.

Those I have read, and while Convergence was more clarifying the New 52's canon, Rebirth just kind of started really muddying the waters with New Earth canon. Doomsday Clock was when they threw up their hands, said "whatever", and brought back the New Earth canon in full. But THEN Death Metal and Infinite Frontier (which again, I haven't read) started acting like "no, no, parts of the Prime Earth canon are still canon", so I think that's why I'm confused.

More like DC's current continuity is a complete mess. And there are no writers who want to make things clearer.

Marv Wolfman wanted to make the continuity clearer with COIE, and he did it. I preferred the original Multiverse with Infinite Earths, but it worked. It made everything simpler: one Earth, everything happened there, end of the story.

The problems started when they tried to bring back the Multiverse, but overall 52 was handled pretty well.

The real thing that made DC lose any chance of continuity was the New 52. Differently from COIE, the New 52 wanted to erase what happened before. COIE tried to justify everything that happened before 1985 with plausible excuses, while New 52 was just pressing a reset button. And it went downhill from there.

What I feel DC is trying to do now in infinite frontier is take everything good from post crisis earth and from post flashpoint earth to create something with good parts from both continuities but have thus far failed terribly in explaining any of this to the fans, any way infinite frontier has been going really great so far according to me messed up timeline or not

I think it’s probably better to just stick with Prime Earth because it’s simpler to follow than moving back to new earth or making a bunch of brand new pages on “earth 0” or whatever they’re calling it, but really this is merging different aspects of the like ten previous earths that have all blended together over dc’s 80+ year history in addition to all that bleed over from adaptations.

They always called it Earth-0.

We have to wait and see what happens after Infinite Frontier (the miniseries) which has only one issue left. But if I understood correctly, this might be the end of the multiverse, or maybe the connection between the universes will be erased.

But yes, the gist is that we are still in Prime Earth. In-universe, several points of “past Prime Earth history” has been restored, and it just so happens that much of that history resembles New Earth lore. But by no means is it true that “All of New Earth history is canon again.” Much like how readers had to do so after CoIE (when seeing which parts of Earth-One, the template for New Earth, has been changed), we have to wait and see what elements are restored. We can’t assume which elements are now part of canon until they’re explicitly stated. A large portion of Prime Earth’s published history pre-Death Metal still exists, even if slightly altered, unless new books state otherwise. We have to take things case-by-case, one step at a time.
