So, I've just realized something. Across all the movies in the DCEU, three of them have featured different takes on the character of the Joker. I know the topic of the DCEU having three Jokers has been brought up before (to varying degrees of validity), but this is just gonna be my take on the possibility of the DCEU having three different Jokers by breaking down how we've seen the Joker depicted in the films he was depicted in.
1. The Criminal. We all know about the tattoo-clad mistake that was Suicide Squad's Joker. He was very much portrayed more as a gangster than a psychopathic villain with a clown-like aesthetic. While I agree that they should've at least done something major with him if this truly was a new take on the Joker (like making him the MAIN antagonist as they built him up to be), his more mobster-ish outset could just be seen as the DCEU's equivalent to the Criminal version of the Joker; the one who doesn't concern himself with being anything beyond another crime boss.
2. The Comedian. With the release of the Snyder Cut, so too came the redemption of Jared Leto, who was for some reason blamed for the Joker's portrayal in Suicide Squad. While Leto definitely could work on the laugh and the "gifts" were kinda weird, in hindsight, he could've done much better had the character of the Joker been written better. And by golly, did he deliver there. Gone were the tattoos, the attempts to hoe off Harley and the edgy gangster sh*t. This was, by all means, the Joker. Or, at least the Joker as we see him. See, this is another scenario where this Joker's whole aesthetic aligns with one of the three Jokers; specifically, the Comedian Joker. The one who reflects how the Joker has been for the last decade or so. The sadistic yet humorous psychopath who sees Batman as his equal and almost friend. While some may write this off as a simple dream version of the Joker, I think Batman of all people should know how his nemesis would act, specifically in the moment he killed his adopted son (since I believe the Comedian Joker killed Jason Todd).
3. The Clown. For as briefly as he appears in Harley Quinn and the Birds Of Prey, we seem to get the impression that this Joker, while still a criminal who abuses and manipulates people, is more than a little campy. The man tattoos clown makeup on people's faces and sets up elaborate mazes out of amusement park attractions. He's also the first look we've had of the Joker where he actually wears a purple suit in the like half second we see him tattooing the clown makeup on Chuckles or whatever's face. Based on his actions and the relative silliness of them, he fits into the Clown version of the Joker. The man who, in Batman's own words, embraces the lethal campiness of his crimes. I could very easily see this Joker pull off the Laughing Fish scheme. But, given how brief of a time we've had with this Joker, I don't have many words to say about him.
So, there's my take on the potential three Jokers of the DCEU. While it's easy to simply write off the Joker's inconsistent personality and aesthetic in the DCEU as there being three people who wrote him, I sort of like the idea of the DCEU having three Jokers. Who knows, maybe we could even get a movie based on the Three Jokers arc in the future with this idea. Like, all three writers of the three movies allow Leto to play three different version of the character. Nevertheless, tell me what you guys think about this and if you think there are three Jokers running around in the DCEU.
