I think in one of the solicits for the upcoming JLvLoSH said there'd be more background on him, but so did a solicit for LoSH like two years ago and we didn't get much backstory there either

A comic book page made a news article on one of Bendis Legion's issues, and it explained that the Gold Lantern is like an evolved version of the Green Lantern. By the century that story takes place in, the Guardians developed the ability to harness the entire Emotional Spectrum, instead of just Green. So the Gold Lantern is just a colored version of the White Lantern.

Yeah, that was the initial explanation, but now it seems it's something else, and Bendis hasn't explained much.

I don't have any proof but I have a feeling that they will reveal the gold lantern ring's origin and function in the Justice league vs legion of super-heroes crossover.
