Technically, the Red Lanterns at large aren’t “supposed” to be evil. Atrocitus is fueled by what he deems to be righteous fury. He becomes enraged when he sees injustice (as one could say many people do, as evidenced when a video of someone doing something awful goes viral). So, he uses his rage to fuel his power as he exacts revenge. In essence, one of the biggest differences between the Red Lantern Corps and other corps is that the Reds believe that revenge is a form of justice, whereas many people of other alien cultures (including humans) often believe that revenge isn’t actually a form of justice. So it boils down to a difference in opinion about ethics. Atrocitus doesn’t really see himself as a villain, but he doesn’t want to let a hero get in the way of his pursuit of “justice” (revenge).

Rage is at the far end of the spectrum and so is the hardest to control and it is consuming, much like love at the opposite end. The red are unique in that the rings consume them in body as well as mind. Their rage boils their blood so that only the ring keeps them alive. It feeds on their pain and channels it into blind aggression, so much so that few reds can even focus enough to make constructs.

Atros may think he’s righteous, but his desire for revenge will never be quenched. A those who seek revenge are hypocrites, inflicting harm on those who harmed them. It is unknown if his ethics are his own, or if he is blinded by the perpetual rage he is doomed to live with, but he is a murderer, plain and simple. Not only that but he also robbed the other reds of their free will, something any proud American would seemingly find offensive.

Yeah,the Red Lanterns believe they're good guys and some of them may have been, revenge is a kind of justice after all and that's what they're all about,but it's difficult to be the bigger men and do most hero stuff when you get extremely angry and frustrated constantly thanks to the red energy,after some time Capturing Villains and seeing them escape you may be so frustrated with that Hero Villain Dance that you may just end up killing a Criminal or 2.
