The Blackest Night hook was having living characters encounter deceased characters related to their lives, now as Black Lanterns. I can’t say that’s my favorite prompt to be given, but I do like the concept of bringing a series back for one additional issue, continuing the old numbering.
I wouldn’t mind having a resurrection issue for Starman, be it the Will Payton series, which I loved, or the Jack Knight series, which is more revered for a reason. Whatever number you chose, I would’ve liked to have done something fun with that, as there would’ve been multiple living and multiple dead Starman to play with.
More than that, though, I would’ve wanted to do a resurrection issue for Vigilante. I enjoyed the Adrian Chase era. We could’ve had one of the then-modern Vigilante (Dorian Chase) square off against Adrian himself, along with Alan Welles and Dave Winston. Having Dorian speak to their brother could’ve been cool, especially if Adrian’s BL self would’ve tried to push the nihilistic thoughts on vigilantism he adopted in his depressed state before his suicide. Having Alan and Dave there, who each had very different views on justice when they bore the mask, and having them compare notes while they were all forcibly evil thanks to the Black light could’ve led to interesting dialogue.
Seeing Adrian react to J.J. Davis, who was one of Adrian’s supporting partners who seemingly died but was revealed to be alive and began helping Dorian, would be something. Adrian’s downward spiral started with J.J.’s apparent death, so I could see Adrian killing J.J. to “restore the narrative,” turning J.J. into a BL, too.
Adeline Kane, who briefly wore the costume, more unofficially, could’ve been there as a Black Lantern, too, but she didn’t really know the others, and I think it’d be more meaningful to use the characters from the Vigilante title itself. I feel the same way about bringing in the other living Vigilantes, Justin Powell and Pat Trayce. I love Pat, and I’m sure Justin is cool. But I think going for the other four mentioned would’ve been better.
I would, however, not mind having other characters appear as Black Lanterns in the revived Vigilante tie-in, like the first Electrocutioner, who was important to Adrian, Alan, and Dave’s histories as Vigilante.
I would go for a resurrected issue of Warlord and see him return
Awesome question! All-Star Squadron
That’s a good one. It’ll be many of the deceased heroes that were on the team
I didn’t even consider that but you’re right, that would be awesome.
What do you think?
