What are your thoughts about the current line up of comics and the DCU in general ever since infinite frontier? Do you like the direction DC seems to be heading in with comics like son of kal-el, new champion of Shazam, world's finest etc?

In my opinion, they're on the right track now. There is a geniune effort on their part to go back to the quality of stories that we were getting in the 2000's before new 52 rebooted everything. Dark crisis hasn't really impressed me yet considering how good of a set-up justice league incarnate and infinite frontier were but the rest of the comics have been pretty fun.
Wally's return as the Flash has been a joy to read. His crossover with the titans and nightwing were pretty fun to read as well and wally's kids bring back the much needed flash-family concept that I feel had taken a back seat since new 52 decided to solely focuss on barry. The only thing that could make it even better would be to bring in bart but he's already starring in an even more wonderful comic that I have absolutely loved so far (except for a few parts), Dark crisis: young justice.
Honestly, I did not see them releasing a new young justice comic but they did and it's exploration of the team's past as well as their place in the present has been everything I could ask for. Some characters do feel quite different but the way the current storyline is progressing it may all just be part of the plot.
The new World's finest has just been phenomenal. The silver age aspects of the comic somehow feel more fresh than most modern storylines. And after such a long time Clark and Bruce actually feel like friends again instead of two people who ocassionally meet to punch a robber or two before going their seprate ways.
The new champion of Shazam, I do admit I'm much more critical while reading this particular comic than any other because Captain Marvel and the Shazam family hold a really special place in my heart and I think while new 52 did mordernize the mythos, it brought in a bunch of unnecessary characters while simultaneously removing some of the things which I really loved about the marvel family from new earth which in itself was a dumbed down earth-S.
Billy taking the wizard's place in the rock of eternity and someone else from his family taking over the role of captain Marvel or in this case the main Shazam isn't particularly new. We have already seen this with Freddie but I think that Mary may be the better candidate among the two to take over for Billy. I have nothing to complain about the issues which have been released so far except for the glaring absence of tawky tawny but hoppy's presence does makes up for it a bit. This version of marry is very different from her new earth or earth-S counterpart but I think this series has potential. Looking forward too seeing how the plot progresses. P.s. the art is awesome.
Superman: Son of kal-el. I wasn't really interested in seeing Jon become the new superman since I would rather that he goes back to being a 12 year old and teaming-up with Damian. I'm definitely still not over DC ageing him up so rapidly but his comic has been a pretty good read so far. I wasn't a fan of making him bi but the decision has grown on me and the way they handled it after he came out and the manner in which he comes out is pretty interesting to read.
Suicide squad was an interesting one. First, the fact that they let us think for so long that Conner had actually become a part of Amanda Waller's task force was just fantastic. I was so furious that they put Conner in with these B and C listers though I was still somewhat intrigued by the setting. When they reveald that it was match all along, I was hooked; that was the moment where I really started to enjoy the book and although "Conner's" involvement with the suicide squad was a really big part of the first few issues, it was not all of the story. Waller's plan from the beginning was to take over earth-3 and the fact that she actually accomplished it was something I didn't see coming even though future state had already partly spoiled much of the story that was to come.
Justice league: Wasn't a fan of the fact that Black Adam was getting yet another redemption arc and well, it went nowhere in the end....again. He's back with the legion of doom but I did mildly enjoy his time with the league while it lasted though I didn't have a single doubt in my mind that he wouldn't turn a villain again. Exploration of Naomi's home universe was interesting but otherwise, nothing that could hold my attention too long. I had lost almost all interest in this book when they announced the death of the justice league. The concept in itself was really great but the execution felt rushed and in the end it couldn't live up to it's hype nor to what I believed to be it's true potential. This storyline could have very well been the first issue of the main Dark crisis event and if the death of the justice league hadn't been so popularized already in an attempt to hype up dark crisis, it would have made for an awesome first issue.
That brings me to the comic which is arguably the most important one being published right now, Dark Crisis. As I've already said, nothing in the main dark crisis issues has impressed me yet but the tie-ins have all been fantastic! From infinite frontier, where it all began, to the flash family trying to find barry beyond our multiverse; from the young justice trying to find themselves again to the Titans academy being destroyed. Everything that has happened in the anticipation of the main event and everything that is happening while the main event takes place is far more interesting than what is happening in the main dark crisis issues themselves.
I'm not saying that dark crisis is bad but everything memorable about this crisis has either been from a tie-in or from a comic which preceded this event rather than from the event itself. I still have hope for this crisis and much of the story is still yet to come. I genuinely wish to like this story more, it's the first crisis which I'm reading in real time, hope they can pull of making it a story worthy of it's predecessors.
I like what's going on at this point with DC from what little I've read. Admittedly I've kind of fallen off of modern comics lately, but I read the first couple issues of most of the Infinite Frontier titles, as well as the new Milestone books, and I enjoyed most of them. I want to wait until Dark Crisis is done and then catch up.
Since I have been actively reading A LOT of books from current DC (which have helped inform a lot of my bigger posts in recent memory), I will make a big reply in a little bit because I have to shop for groceries rn
But be prepared for takes on current books (Flashpoint Beyond, Dark Crisis, Azrael, Batman, Young Justice, Teen Justice, Batman vs Robin, World's Finest, Deathstroke Inc, Poison Ivy) as well as recently cancelled books (The Swamp Thing, Task Force Z, Robin, the Shadow War event)
Flashpoint Beyond is something I expected to hate and I've ended up loving so far. Incredible, griping mystery that really makes me hyped to see how it effects the DC universe going forward
Dark Crisis is whatever, which is a shame cause I loved everything that was leading up to it. It's average, but I expected more (especially since Williamson is one of my faves atm and I loved his previous event Shadow War)
Dark Crisis: Young Justice and Teen Justice are really decent teen team books, I'm absolutely vibing with both of them
World's Finest is so cool. A great little throwback, I absolutely adore the chemistry between Bruce and Clark and I'm into all the new cool ideas and concepts it has created so far. But.....
Batman vs Robin, which in a lot of ways is the sequel to the Nezha arc from WF, is something I'm having mixed feelings on thus far. I loved Williamson's Robin so so much, and to see a mind controlled Damian with two guys he has no history with as far as I'm aware as his goons as the antagonist of BvR's first issue felt like a dissapointment. But I still have hopes. Hope the end of it sees Damian continuing on the path Williamson left him on, since that feels perfect for the character
Deathstroke Inc is also a book I adored a lot (curse you Williamson why must I love everything you've touched other than Dark Crisis). But Year One has probably blown the rest of the book out of the water. Just incredible, a fascinating exploration of a younger Slade. Hope Ed Brisson keeps writing Slade after Dark Crisis ends (and hoping that they continue the King of the Supervillains angle because it was a great new direction for Slade)
Poison Ivy is really fun, a nice small scale story that explore's Pamela coming to terms with her new status quo. I appreciate it for what it is. Between that and Ram V's amazing The Swamp Thing, the Green is in good hands (and yes, I would kill to see Ivy and Levi interact in the Green, maybe give them their crossover book because that'd have tons of potential imo)
Sword of Azrael is great. Another solo story, I really enjoy the exploration of Jean Paul's character. But my mind is low key really focused on the potential ramifications of what the Knights Templar could be aiming for
Chip Zdarsky's Batman is so damn good. I don't think a single Batman creative team has missed since Rebirth, and, if the quality of the Failsafe arc continues in his future stories, we're in for another great. The idea of Failsafe as a villain and how Batman is pulling from his history to try and take it down is so unique and fresh, and between the Zur En Arrh return and the Tower of Babel continuations I'm incredibely into it
And lastly, the recently finished Task Force Z was an incredibely fun action book with a nice pace and some great horror elements. All around dumb fun, wish Jason finally takes a break and that they continue this version of Harvey Dent as someone with government ties and shady connection because it feels like aninteresting, new take on a character that's gotten stale and could use something new
The quality may be all over the place but the connectivity between all the dark crisis comics has been pretty coherent. Flash messed with the legion of doom's abandoned headquarters in his comic and in the latest dark crisis issue, their alarms didn't work because they had been tampered with. I had honestly skimmed over the part where Wally was goofing around but it actually became relevant to the plot in a different comic! I found this pretty funny.
^^ The Swamp thing got cancelled?? Wtf. I really liked Ram V’s run of it and Levi’s character.
What do you think?
