I wonder (no pun intended) why she did that
Read Wonder Woman (Volume 2) #130 - #133. It's all set up there.
How does Hippolyta as the Wonder Woman from the Golden Age work? Did she suddenly come to Man's World and joined the Justice Society during WW2?
^Tupka said Hippolyta traveled back in time to join the JSA as Golden Age Wonder Woman
In the same universe?
Yeah in New Earth, I believe
I must admit, I usually think the initial event that complicated continuity is problematic, but I kind of have a weak spot for (and enjoy the hell out of) stories where clever writers take the awkward continuity they were handed and do something creative with it.
Hippolyta as Wonder Woman, Fury I as the after-the-fact, retconned, pseudo-G.A. mother of Lyta Trevor, and Miss America as a sometimes-stand-in for the G.A. Diana are all… just… the best. It’s an absolute shame that there aren’t more stories to flesh them out… or action figures… or mini-series… or whatever.
I didn’t HATE them re-introducing Diana as the Golden Age WW… it makes some sense, but… I don’t think it matches well with how the character has been portrayed since… the 70s? Definitely since George Perez’s legendary run (which I loved, but also… most post-crisis relaunches started with a new origin mini-series or story arc, and then followed with “and then time passed,” so some pre-crisis stories fit in that gap, and others didn’t… and your headcanon and future writers could figure all that out later… and that was smarter than Wonder Woman and Hawkman, who reset with no gap and have always been some of the most confusing characters continuity-wise since crisis).
It was also just the most interesting takes on… Hyppolyta, Lyta Hall… Miss America… it was the perfect example of taking lemons and making lemonade!
I’m not sure my brain will ever fully let go of that as continuity. Heck, Hippolyta recently taking Diana’s role in the JL is a perfect reprise to that.
Also, if Diana was the G.A. Wonder Woman, why is she never there when the modern JSA gathers? She should be besties with Jay and Alan. She, or maybe Donna (as a legacy member) should be part of the JSA every time out, but that just feels weird. Cassie should be in line for membership but that feels weird too. But if Diana is JL and her mom is JSA? That just kinda feels right. (But Diana would still be on Alan’s short-list for basically every single membership drive…)
^I feel like this is synergy from DC and Warners. DCEU Wonder Woman is essentially an immortal, so I assume the publisher wanted that to be the same for comics Wonder Woman. That makes me upset a little. That and this will all change again soon
Oh I get why they changed it. I just have yet to see her portrayed in comics (or even, frankly, in the movies outside of her solo movies) in a way that makes me think, yup, she’s been around in “man’s world” since the 40s (or 20s!).
Hippolyta as the original golden aged wonder woman
