The Superman movie by Ta-Nehisi Coates and J.J. Abrams is still in development... for some reason.
Now, before anyone pulls the "racism" card, let me remind you that I'm Mexican and that even I felt uncomfortable with the countless Mexican references in Blue Beetle.
There is also the inherent problem with race-swapping a traditionally white character, especially someone as iconic as Superman. You can get away with race-swapping Catwoman, Gordon and even Lois Lane (she is of Asian descent in My Adventures with Superman) because they don't have the same iconic status Superman does.
Yes, we all remember The Little Mermaid and how the mainstream media attempted to shame the fans who disagreed with the casting of Halle Bailey in the leading role, but anyone with a functioning brain will tell you that if people rejected Halle as the new Ariel, it wasn't because of racism. It was because of iconography. The classic image of Ariel as a white-skinned, red-haired mermaid is so popular that any deviation was bound to be met with backlash.
But don't just take my word for it. Here is what Just Some Guy (I'm not kidding, his user name is literally "Just Some Guy") has to say on the matter.
So... yeah, I really hope this movie doesn't get made, just like the recent annoucements about Star Trek.
