Bumblebee is DC’s first Black female superhero, and she should get more panel-time in recognition of that.
I was thinking about who my favourite black character is based on personality. I really like Vic as he grew, but he started out so angry, though that’s understandable because he was an angsty teen whose life (or body) was destroyed.
I really like John Stewart and because of the animated JL he was the first person I associated with GL. When I read the comics the early version was so angry and confrontational. It was quite off-putting when I was used to the more stoic John in the cartoons. Extra weird when you read Guy Gardner’s first appearances. They pretty much switched personalities.
Josh Clay really grew on me and became a legit member of the Doom Patrol in my eyes, but it took a while as he was pretty angry most of the time.
Yes, the pattern was very clear. Having mostly read ‘90s comics, the easily angered protagonist trope was pretty ubiquitous and I just lumped these heroes into that mindset, but the angry black man trope is an entity of its own. Yes, it was overused to negative effect on reflection, but it was rooted in truth. Minorities were angry, and rightly so. John Stewart confronting Hal Jordan about helping entirely alien races over the oppressed in his own country is iconic to this day. Vic Stone having daddy issues may seem stereotypical but it at least flips it on its head by making the Stones affluent and educated. More importantly Cyborg is himself an allegory for prejudice. He hates the way he is judged by his inorganic appearance, something he has no control over, a simple way of making race relatable to any reader. Anyone can imaging how isolating it would feel having a robot body. Not everyone has the empathy to attempt to see things from the perspective of another race or culture. Clay was a Vietnam vet. A man who defied orders out of empathy for oppressed people and deserted. He was angry, not just about the oppression he faced personally, but how America is so willing to commit atrocities for irrational ideologies. His unnecessary death at the hands of a entitled, white megalomaniac speaks volumes and is one of the biggest tragedies I read in comics.
Black history is month is important, not because black history should be reduced to a small portion of the year, but as a vehicle to make black history history in itself, all year round, as all cultures should be represented fairly.
^^Nope. Bumblebee is already shoe horned into enough comics as is such as Teen Titans World's Finest.
Anyways most read black hero is Cyborg with him being in 220 comics I've read, almost entirely consisting from him being a continuous team member of the Teen Titans and Justice League.
Really enjoy Cyborg and Bumblebee. Vixen comes to mind. She is a favorite character of mine. I have her first sppearance and was an instant fan.
