Detective Comics #601-603. Tulpa one of my favourite Batman stories. Really interesting concept to begin with something that starts out as street level crime and escalates into supernatural desperation. Shows vulnerability in Batman, both physically and internally. Shows his humility in knowing when he’s over his head but also his determination to never give up despite all odds. This story really sets the tone for Etrigan for the rest of New Earth.
When Jessica became a Fear Lantern. I had zero interest in her character before that, and I hate it when the human Green Lanterns use the other colors since the writers always try to make them more proficient than the actual experts of that Corps like when Guy took over Atros' Lanterns... it was ridiculous. But anyway:
Not only was the art really good on this "annual" but the writer seems to actually understand Sinestro and his Corps. It showed how fear can be used for good and showed a side of Sinestro we do not usually see.
It's unfortunate that the story ended as soon as another writer decided to make Jessica a Green Lantern again with no explanation whatsoever.
Superman: Grounded. I know, I know, most people would dismiss it as "Superman walks from one place to another", but it has some good moments about Superman trying to reconnect with the normal people of America after spending years fighting global threats like mad scientists and alien invasions.
Now, the book got off to a slow start and, in the first three issues, Superman just walked from place to another and talked to people, but after Chris Roberson took over the book, Superman went to walking from one place to another and actually saving people.
"Made of Wood" from Detective Comics 784-786 (2003). Gotham's two great protectors - Batman and Green Lantern Alan Scott - team up to solve a generation-spanning mystery. Fun stuff including Bruce and Alan in action out of costume and a rare smile for Bruce.
