I disagree. The fact is that each Bat-Family member I listed has their own personality and role to play that not every writer knows how to (or even tries to) write correctly. I mean except for Tiffany, Helena W., Bette and Carrie, who aren’t members on Prime Earth but sure as hell should be.
Unfortunately, some people had set their hearts and minds into hating characters even before they made their official debuts, lest we forget some fans treating Jace Fox as the black man who appropriated the Batman identity without Bruce's permission or approval.
It's not even exclusive to the Batman Family. Some people still don't like that DC made Jon the new Superman while his father was still active, or the fact that DC just gave up trying to make Yara Flor happen after her initial book ended.
I mean DC is to blame in literally all three of those scenarios. They gave up. The writing was shit. If they want people to appreciate their work then they should actually put in effort.
That's not how it works. Sometimes, even critcally acclaimed books can be cancelled because they are competing with more popular and successful books, like Batman or Amazing Spider-Man. Even now, Bruce Wayne and Peter Parker are the most popular superheroes in the world and you can always expect their books to be high sellers even if the writing isn't good. For years, people have been complaining that the writing for ASM sucks and yet that book continues selling like pancakes.
The failure of a book/movie/TV show/video game/whatever is more frequently attributed to its marketing rather than anything to do with the story.
I’m not sure if I agree with you or not, Vlad. I didn’t read Batman of New York because I wasn’t interested. At no point did I hate it. Likewise Batman Inc in general, for me.
I’m closer to hating Jon Kent, mostly because I don’t like tying Clark down with a family but especially after the aging-up business. A second Superman is unnecessary, but Jon exists now so they had to do something with him.
And I thought Yara was a great Wonder Girl and much more interesting than Cassie Sandsmark, but sadly there weren’t many of us. Whether to cancel or replace the creative team? Probably a complex decision.
If DC continues using Clark, Bruce and Diana, it's because those are the characters DC thinks people want to see. There are more stories than people can consume in their entire lifetimes, so people will gravitate towards the stories they already like.
Getting rid of Jace and Yara is easy because they are not particularly close to Bruce and Diana, etc. Jon, on the other hand, is Clark's son, so his absence would definitely be noticed. Brian Michael Bendis tried to have Jon join the Legion of Super-Heroes but that didn't work.
You'd be surprised by how many people complain about DC introducing new characters only to completely forget about them once their appeal wears off, either because fans don't like them or because creators just don't know what to do with them. If you don't know what to do with your characters, why bother introducing them in the first place?
Don't get me wrong, there are people who unironically love the new characters and they talk about how the new characters were just not given a fair chance, but ultimately, popularity speaks for itself.
Nowadays Jon is just a middle finger to Kon-El.
Personally, I believe the Batman Family has a surplus of characters. New characters are introduced, either subtly or with a lot of fanfare, but once their initial popularity wears off, they fade into the background. For every Damian, there are three Bluebirds. Does anyone remember Bluebird? No? Me neither.
@Leader Vladimir I agree, it’s way overbloated. These new characters don’t add anything, they just take away emphasis from the already existing batfamily characters.
What I'm trying to say is that, if you want to introduce a character to a group, make sure that character brings something unique to the group. Don't have that character be an exact replica of a pre-existing character. In Shazam! Fury of the Gods, both the heroes and the villains had the same basic powers so everyone except Shazam and Kalypso had to be depowered to preserve any kind of meaningful conflict.
What do you think?
