Having looked at all the recent news we've gotten from DC Studios and James Gunn in particular, I think I have an idea of where the new DC cinematic universe is going. We know that Superman has been recast, and we also know Gunn has said they'll be keeping what's worked in the past for DC and throwing out what doesn't. Based on that, I'm thinking that we're not getting a total reboot like some people have proposed, but rather something closer to a reboot like, say, Flashpoint was for the comics. Sure, a lot of stuff started over, but plenty of stories like Final Crisis, The Killing Joke, and Grant Morrison's Batman remained canon. Is this what I want to happen? Not really. I'd rather they just stick with the DCEU or reboot entirely. But I can see it working in the long run IF it's done right, and I do think it's the direction they're going.
I'm thinking that Snyder's films (and Suicide Squad) are almost certainly gone. They are divisive films, yes, and the majority of audiences did seem to enjoy Zack Snyder's Justice League, but I think this more comes down to only keeping projects that were critically successful OVERALL, So in other words, I think Gunn means to only keep DCEU movies that have gotten generally positive reception. Here's what I think the DCU will look like after The Flash reboots it (I do now think that will be the reboot, just to note):
Wonder Woman
Aquaman
Shazam!
Birds of Prey (potentially; mostly positive, but still mixed reactions from that film, if I recall)
The Suicide Squad
Peacemaker
Shazam! Fury of the Gods
The Flash (anything past this point is automatically DCU canon)
Blue Beetle
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
James Gunn's Superman
I don't say this to diminish Snyder's work at DC. I actually quite liked his take on the DC Universe (though not without its issues, such as its portrayal of Superman or Batman using guns), and I am really sad about Cavill leaving, especially after he just came back. But this might be the right thing for DC right now, and I trust James Gunn regardless, so I'm excited to see his new slate of projects in 2023.
