As anyone who’s ever met me will tell you, I’m a massive Batman fan. He’s my favorite superhero of all time, which is why it pains me to hear that Kevin Conroy, the voice of Batman in many DC projects, mainly the DCAU projects and Arkham games, has passed away after a short battle with cancer. The man was an incredible talent, easily the best Batman ever to hit the screen. His was the version I was introduced to watching BTAS as a child, and his is the voice I hear reading the comics.
He was always just so commanding and badass, and I’ve never heard any Batman actor even attempt to mimic his brilliant vocals. But he could also be friendly and vulnerable in the moments when he needed to be, probably best highlighted in Mask of the Phantasm, one of my all time favorite movies, where we see him both as the cold, angry Batman but also as the quiet but emotionally conflicted Bruce Wayne.

I sadly never got to meet him, but I always heard about how much he loved meeting fans at conventions, and just how enthusiastic and joyous he was with everyone he met. Every time you saw an interview with him, you could tell how much he loved telling stories and delighting others with his experiences. Conroy also wrote a phenomenal story for the DC Pride special earlier this year, talking about his struggles as a gay man in the 20th century. Even as an openly bisexual man myself, I think I’d struggle talking about my hardest sexuality struggles to a massive audience like that. But he put it all on the page, leaving out nothing, and reminding millions around the world that they aren’t alone, and it’s okay to be who they are.
So thank you Kevin Conroy. Thank you for years of being a badass hero, as an actor and a writer. And thank you for inspiring so many with your definitive portrayal of one of the greatest heroes of all time. You will be missed greatly. Rest in peace.
