Okay. So, we all know Batman. Bruce Wayne, a young boy whose parents were brutally gunned down in front of him during the most important developmental years of his life. This crucial event in his childhood ends up planting a seed inside of young Bruce. And from that seed, Batman was born. And what's one, crucial part of Batman as a character? His rules. His morals. Among one of them, it's that he DOES NOT KILL. For any reason. But the reason as to why have become so convoluted, so unequivocally ridiculous, I feel that they do a massive disservice to his character, and make him look just as insane as the criminals he fights every night. What could I be talking about, you ask? THE FUCKING 'If I were to kill, I wouldn't be able to stop' BULLSHIT! Batman doesn't kill for 2 simple reasons.
The main reason Batman DOES NOT KILL is directly tied to the death of his parents. This senseless act of violence instilled in him the belief that all life is sacred. And the act of taking a life would make him no better than the villains he faces every day. He believes, regardless of who they are, everyone deserves a second chance. An opportunity to change for the better.
By making him not kill because he wouldn't be able to stop himself, it takes away from one of the most vital parts of his character, and makes it difficult for us readers to root for him whenever we know that he genuinely thinks like this. Someone can be deeply disturbed and traumatised, and even violent, without having the desire to just go ballistic and actually Murder hundreds, even thousands of people. Regardless if they were criminals or not. I am a living example of this, having DID due to extreme trauma in my own childhood. This is why even among the vast amount of Batman comics that are coming out, I always find myself going back to the earlier comics in the 80's. I hope that we can leave this characterisation in the comics in the past, and that any media in the future with Batman can capture the essence of his character once more. (specifically talking about James Gunn's Brave And The Bold in the DCU)
But we'll just have to wait and see.
