NOW: 5 months ago, Henry Cavill was removed as Superman. An unbelievably fantastic casting call in a current age of terrible casting calls (most of them come from Marvel, but still). It stung, it was rough, but while it's still not an open invitation for them to f**k up casting the next one, I've finally made peace with it and here's why.
FIRST: I would just like to undoubtedly affirm that I've loved Zack Snyder's DC films. I know some didn't like Batman V.S Superman but I honestly thought the whole trilogy was solid gold. Man of Steel is probably my 3rd favorite DC film (with Watchmen also directed by Snyder being #2). The man did a great job with capturing the whole raw, elemental, concept-heavy nature of DC which was breathtaking for all those of us who understood it.
BUT: I go to the movies these days and (except for whatever I'm seeing) what've we got? Horror, gratuitous violence, more horror, more dark sh*t, more blood and the rest is pretty much just sarcastic jokes about sex. Garbage like Indie slasher films are actually getting respect & even kids movies seem like they're done with responsibility. And then everyone wonders why we're all so depressed & miserable constantly. Excuse me captain, isn't that an iceberg over there? Oy. Now, don't get me wrong, I understand the need to play in the dark occasionally, really I do, but there has to be a balance. I like the villains wiki, but it honestly disturbs me that it's so much bigger than the heroes one. There has to be an equal, if not greater supply of lighter fare, just to give us a little hope & innocence in this world. I think half the reason I even bother with most of post-Endgame MCU is for that reason, because for all it's issues, it's on the brighter side of the tracks. As cliche as it sounds, you need some light to counteract the dark because otherwise, half of this generation's kids are gonna hang themselves at 14, I promise you.
SO: The fact is, for better or for worse, Mr. Snyder has gotta go. He may be the director we deserve, but he's definitely not the one we need right now. Light, hope, the pure good side of the spectrum, that responsibility falls to Superman more than any other character in comics, if not fiction. And sadly, I don't think it's a kingdom that Mr. Snyder for all his skills, is capable of overseeing. Everyone has been so caught up arguing whether a darker edgier Superman DOES work, no one's asked if it SHOULD these days. Superman did look cool in a black suit but should Superman have a black suit? For any reason? We thank Zack Snyder for his service but hard as is it is, it's time to say goodbye.
All I know is, if the universe is going to go and most of the established character is going to go, and the director NEEDS to go, maybe a clean break from whatever else, even such a phenomenal casting (even AFTER they worked out the bugs, I can't be the only one who saw the hair & suit in Black Adam) as Henry Cavill isn't such a terrible thing after all.
