"Homecoming": Day 1

Synopsis for "Homecoming"

Day 1
Ellen Baker comes home after a date with her new boyfriend, Roger. Suddenly, her long-lost husband, Buddy, appears before her doorstep enveloped in shimmering yellow energy. Ellen falls to her knees and thanks God that her husband is alive and safe.

Day 2
A massive gathering of heroes come together at Centennial Park in Metropolis. It is the one-year anniversary of the death of Superboy. Robin has changed his costume to red and black to honor his late friend. Wonder Woman is present, now laboring under the guise of special agent Diana Prince. Donna Troy has assumed the mantle of Wonder Woman. Ravager meets Kid Devil. He is eager to get back into the hero game and asks her about the Teen Titans.

Day 3
Opto309V has brought Adam Strange back to Rann. The scientist Sardath clones Adam a new set of eyes, allowing him can see again for the first time in a year. John Stewart is present, and Adam tells him that Lobo has the Emerald Eye of Ekron.

Day 4
Lobo brings the Emerald Eye to the thrice-perfected dolphin God. The God tells him that he coveted the eye because it is the only thing in the universe that can destroy him. Lobo sneers and says, "Ya don't say..." The Emerald Eye activates, unleashing a volley of green energy.

Day 6
Two alien bounty hunters employed by Lady Styx arrive at the Baker home to kill Animal Man. Starfire appears just in time to save the Bakers from being killed by their death rays. She then passes out from exhaustion on their front stoop.

Day 7
Rip Hunter, Booster Gold, and Skeets arrive in the Rocky Mountains headquarters of Professor T.O. Morrow. Morrow is exhausted and stares wearily at the android face of Red Tornado in his workshop. Skeets begins shaking and the others discover that his robotic carapace has been functioning as super-advanced cocoon. The Venusian chrysalis, Mister Mind, emerges from the cocoon and threatens to consume the Universe. Rip, Booster and Morrow rush back into the Time Sphere. Hunter tells them that they are going back to where it all started.

Synopsis for "The Origin of the Justice League of America"

In the Post-Infinite Crisis environment, the Justice League of America was first founded by Aquaman, Black Canary, Green Lantern, the Flash, and Martian Manhunter, with Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman functioning as co-founders. The heroes united to protect the Earth from an alien invasion wrought by a race known as the Appellaxians. Shortly after the invasion, Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman became full-time members. Over the span of many years, dozens of heroes have joined the ranks of the Justice League. The current incarnation of the League is based out of Washington D.C. and consists of Batman, Black Canary, Black Lightning, Geo-Force, Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, Red Arrow, Red Tornado, Vixen, and Wonder Woman.

Notes

  • This issue shipped on April 25th, 2007.
  • The events from this issue take place after the events from the World War III limited series.
  • The Origin of the Justice League: Following Crisis on Infinite Earths, Wonder Woman's placement as a member of the original Justice League of America was removed from continuity in favor of Black Canary. In fact, the League had never even met Wonder Woman until some six years after the team's formation. Infinite Crisis however, re-inserted Wonder Woman as an original League member, but offered no explanation as to the plot-holes concerning the rest of her origin. Wonder Woman's re-insertion in League history was first established in Justice League of America (Volume 2) #0.
  • "Homecoming" is reprinted in 52 Vol. 4 of the 2007 4-volume edition, 52 Volume Two of the 2016 2-volume edition, and 52 Omnibus.

Trivia

  • The ticker-tape at the bottom of the cover reads, "The Mystery in Space is revealed... Time is broken... 51 issues down and one more to go... ".
  • Including the Fish God and the two alien bounty hunters, there are exactly 52 characters that appear in this issue.
  • The celebration in this issue mirrors the celebration in Week 1. This raises some interesting logistical questions as only 50 weeks have actually passed between these occurrences. Possible explanations include: 1) the holiday is a "floating holiday", 2) a year in the DCU is only 50 weeks long (which may help explain the slow aging of characters), and (of course) 3) editorial mandates/poetic license (in which case the week/day notations may not be reliable).
