Synopsis for "Episode Three: The Philosopher's Stone"
The morning after Abin Sur came to Evergreen, John Stewart goes out to the edge of the dome. He sees a vision of a ring of light in darkness and hears a voice telling him he must have knowledge to command "the flame" and to be without fear, but he ignores it. Todd Rice, the owner of the local coffee shop, comes out to join him and they look at the body of the dead biker on the other side. Todd says that everything is surprisingly calm and John replies that people are still expecting the authorities to show up and save them. They watch a minivan drive up to the dome and then drive away, and John theorises that the domes affects people's minds so they simply don't realise it's there and are compelled to make a detour to avoid it. He says that they need to start figuring out the rules and takes out the ring he found the previous day. John reveals that it is an earring which the dead biker was wearing when he crashed into the dome, which means it must have passed through the barrier somehow. He throws it at the dome, and to Todd's astonishment it goes through and lands on the other side.
In the present day Jo Mullein tries to talk to Hal Jordan, who is now crying black tears, but he tells her he cannot control the hand. It points the gun at her and fires a blast of concentrated darkness at her. Jo instinctively create a force field around herself and rises up into the air. She yells at Hal to get control of he hand and creates a construct of a fist that punches him out of the diner and far out into the desert beyond. She flies over to him and warns him that if he can't get control of himself she will do it for him. The Black Hand reaches out to her against Hal's wishes and he asks her how she is controlling the light.
In the past, John round up Hal and Jo to join him at the edge of the dome. He tells them about the ring but also that it was not real gold, merely electroplated tin. He takes a gold-coloured plastic action figure from Hal and is able to push it through the barrier, revealing that anything which appears to be gold can make it through, even if it is not actually made of the metal. He then throws his grandmother's actual gold engagement ring at the dome, and it not only passes through but actually leaves a hole in the dome which quickly closes. Jo asks if they could make a way for someone to escape if they gathered all the gold in the town, and John replies that they probably could, but he doesn't think that's the lesson they're supposed to be learning. Before he can explain further Abin Sur flies down and obliterates him, saying that John Stewart has been judged. Todd runs out of the coffee shop and shoots at Abin Sur with a shotgun, but Abin Sur blocks the bullets with a force field and flies away again, telling Todd that judgement is in progress. Jo, Hal and Todd mourn John; Hal says he was wrong to treat their situation like a puzzle, and it won't end unless someone stops it. He goes home and paints the bullets in Rita's gun gold.
