Synopsis for "Last Son"

The majority of the superheroes have been depowered and captured, leaving the Shazam Family as the most powerful heroes still at large. Although they were largely depowered by Paradise Lost's attack on Justice League Dark, they managed to escape with some of their magic retained and so Waller tasks Last Son, the Amazo who stole the Superman Family's powers, to bring them in. To assist him she takes Parasite's armband which suppresses his hunger and forces him to track the Captain and Mary Marvel. Parasite tracks them to the Rock of Eternity, at which point Last Son murders him as he is no longer useful.

Billy and Mary escape home to Philadelphia and travel to the Rock of Eternity through the portal in Billy's closet, hoping to recharge their powers. However, the Gods who grant them their powers refuse to help, saying that they will not interfere in fights between mortals. They sneak into the Chamber of Souvenirs, now overseen by Mister Dinosaur, hoping to find a weapon which will allow them to fight back. Mister Dinosaur says he knows just the relic to help them, but won't release it until they fill out the necessary paperwork.

However, before they can do anything else Last Son blasts through the wall. Mister Dinosaur tries to hold him off while Billy and Mary run to the portal. Last Son quickly overpowers Mister Dinosaur, but is attacked by Black Adam, who came to defend the Rock. They battle through the Chamber, until Last Son sees Parasite's body and begins to glitch, declaring that he "hurts". Adam tells him that by absorbing Superman's powers he also absorbed his morality, and is feeling intense guilt at what he has done. Adam seemingly beats Last Son down by telekinetically throwing rocks at him, then tries to finish him off with the lightning, but Last Son grabs him and starts draining his powers, which will kill him. Last Son apologises, but even with his new conscience he believes he must complete his mission for the greater good.

May sees what is happening and says they need to save Adam, and Billy reluctantly agrees. Billy distracts Last Son and the robot swoops in to grab him. Billy calls the lightning down on them both and Mary kicks a stack of shelves onto Last Son, hoping to at least damage him.

Back on Earth, Steve Trevor is ordered to report to Gamorra to work alongside the Bureau of Sovereignty. He is met by Last Son, who appears to be undamaged. Last Son leads Trevor through the prison and he sees the imprisoned heroes, including Billy, Mary and Black Adam. He reflects that Waller is completely out of control and doesn't seem to care about the consequences of her actions: foreign governments are protesting their superheroes being depowered and detained by the United States, civilians around the world are in a terrified frenzy, and the global stock market and economy are on the verge of collapse due to the widespread instability. Trevor worries that Waller may soon start arresting public figures, scientists or politicians who disagree with her. He is taken to Sarge Steel's office and Sarge smugly tells Steve that Trevor works for him now, but Steve thinks to himself "The Hell I do."

Notes

  • According to Mister Dinosaur, it has been one month since the events of Shazam! (Volume 5) #8.
  • This story shows that the Sphere of the Gods is still accessible from Earth 0.
    • This implies that, in the last issue, Oliver Queen meant that just the Bleed and the Orrery of Worlds were sealed away by Amanda Waller, similar to what she did to Earth 3 during the War for Earth 3.
  • Billy and Mary's story is a follow-up to the events of Wonder Woman (Volume 6) #11, which was published the week after this issue.
