- This is your truest weakness. Not your poisoned, weakening body. Your love of weaker, lesser things. That is why Mongul, and not the Superman, yet holds the chain of Warworld. So say the dead. And as you once boasted, Superman... only one of us now stands.
Action Comics #1037 is an issue of the series Action Comics (Volume 1) with a cover date of January, 2022. It was published on November 30, 2021.
Synopsis for "The Warworld Saga, Part 2"
The United Planets representatives are gathered around a round-table, discussing Superman's Authority having arrived on Warworld. The representatives agree that Mongul is good as finished, and that soon all their home planets will be infinitely safer than they were before. Some few think the United Planets should be seen aiding Superman in his efforts, that they should send in the United Order and a Daxamite army, but Lord Premier Thaaros interupts. Thaaros explains how if Superman were to succeed, and Warworld were liberated, they would be the ones to intake and adopt all the leaderless Warzoons. Nobody would want those cannibals and murderers on their home-worlds, of course not. Thaaros convinces them not to send for help.
On Warworld, Superman's Authority faces off with Mongul and his champions in an arena. Mongul explains to his champions that they may kill Superman's "vassals", but the Superman is his alone. Superman asks Mongul why he thinks that this will turn out differently than it did for his father so many times before, and he explains that his father lacked vision, only gaining victory through strength. He is not so foolish. Superman charges towards Mongul and they begin to fight. June sees Mother as an extreme threat, and conjures a massive glowing green snake, that swallows Mother whole. This causes Manchester Black to take back all the negativities he's said about magic and "magicians". They don't celebrate long though, as Mother casts a massive illusion of her own upper-body coming out a equally large crack in the ground. The illusion the proceeds to devour June. Nat rushes to save her, but Apollo and Midnighter pull her back, explaining that they have to take down Mongul.
Apollo rushes into the sky to take out the creature that Mongul is riding in the sky, but Unmade appears in front of him, and Apollo bounces off it. Nat and Apollo go to check on him where he crashed, but he insists he's fine, and flies back up only to be stabbed through the chest Unmade's sharpened arm, collapsing back to the ground where the Unmade follows him. Nat and Midnighter charge Unmade. Meanwhile, behind a broken statue, Teacher watches, holding an Orphan Box. Manchester Black approaches him, asking if he's the one controlling unmade. Black explains that he doesn't pick up any real thoughts in Unmade, and there wouldn't be any other reason to have someone like Teacher on the field. Teacher says that he's been enhanced so that psychic attacks don't effect him so there's no use in that, and threatens black with the Orphan Box. Black proceeds to pick up a stray wood post, and beat Teacher to death with it. "Sometimes, the old ways are best."
In the sky, Mongul and Superman fight. Mongul boasts to Superman, saying he came to save the Warzoons but instead they cheer for his death in the bleachers of the stadium. They never asked for his help. Superman knocks Mongul off his creature and into the ground with a single punch. "One of them did." Mongul picks up an axe as Superman descends to his level, and as they fight, he explains that during his rule, he replaced the old Warworld generators with new ones, ones that generate the same radiation as a red sun would.
Nearby, Lia and OMAC are fighting Mongul's pet creature, when Darling appears and sweeps the creature away. Lia, well-intentioned, sees that Darling is carrying Orphan, and mistakes him for an ordinary infant. She charges towards Darling, which is more worried about OMAC at the minute, and begins unplugging the wires attached to the bottom of Orphans glass shell. She quickly realizes her mistake when Orphan begins to speak, "You should not have come, Lia Nelson.", she is, however, too late as Darling grabs Lia, and pummels her into the ground. Superman swoops in, throwing Darling into the horizon. Superman comes to comfort Lia, but she interrupts, explaining that the Warzoons don't know any better, and that once they learn of his true intentions, they will turn around. She then falls quiet. Superman begins to cry, but there is no time to mourn. Mongul impales Superman while vulnerable with his kryptonite spear, using Superman's line from the previous issue, "only one of us now stands".
At the round table of United Planets representatives, panic is everywhere. They have just seen Superman of Earth, their only hope against Warworld, die. However, Thaaros manages to calm the room, explaining that there is nothing they could possibly do that would not make the situation worse for themselves. The only ethical choice, the only thing they can do is nothing. Stunned and disappointed, the United Planets representatives, one at a time, get up from their chairs and leave, stunned that this is the only reasonable course of action, and disappointed that they're going to go through with it. Alone, at the round table of the United Planets, sits Lord Premier Thaaros, smiling.
