Synopsis for Zatara: "They Wanted Wings"

Russ Bright invents a working set of wings and demonstrates his prototype by flying it himself, but cannot obtain financial backing to begin mass production. Soon some convicts read about his invention in the newspapers. One convict, Clipper, is able to pass word to his gang, to steal a bunch of Bright's wings, and smuggle them into the prison.

That same day, Zatara is doing a benefit performance at that prison, and gifts the inmates with a set of band instruments, then tours the prison. He and the warden get head-konked unconscious, plus tied up and blindfolded, along with a number of guards, when Clipper leads a mass escape. Clipper flies away, with three other flying escapees. Recovering consciousness, Zatara does a Houdini-style escape stunt to get unblindfolded, then uses Zatara-style magic to set free the warden and guards.

The escapees have a head start, so Zatara asks a nearby cloud which way they went, and is told, then he rides the cloud like a pony, in the getaway direction, until they overtake the winged cons. Zatara turns a flock of birds into flying policemen, who gang-tackle the escapees. The cons fight their way free, and escape, by stealing a car from a couple of tourists. But Zatara catches up to them, and turns all four of them into giant butterflies, and catches them in a giant butterfly net. Soon the convicts are in a holding cell, telling their story to some disbelieving reporters.

Publicity from this story, plus Zatara's endorsement, persuades some formerly-skeptical financiers to back Russ Bright in bringing his wings to market.
