Synopsis for "Phantoms, Part One"

During the fifty-two days between the defeat of Amanda Waller and Darkseid's attack on the Watchtower; the lens of the Phantom Zone Projector in the rebuilt Fortress of Solitude suddenly cracks. It opens a portal, and three Phantom Zone prisoners who have been forcibly fused together crawl through, screaming in Kryptonese. They fly to Metropolis and attack Superman in a frenzy of pain-driven madness. Because they possess the combined strength of three Kryptonians they overpower him, and he is only saved from death by Supergirl's arrival.

The two of them try to fight the Phantom Zoners for an hour, but although they get some shots in the Zoners are still winning because Superman and Kara need to divide their attention between the fight and protecting civilians. In desperation, Superman flies to the desolate waste of Dallol in Ethiopia and digs up his last resort- a lead lined canister containing a chunk of Gold Kryptonite. The Gold K would permanently rob the Zoners of their powers, but if he or Supergirl were exposed for even a millisecond they would lose their powers too.

Superman flies back to Metropolis with the canister, but as he prepares to use it, the Zoners blast him with their heat vision across the city to Hobsneck bridge and he drops the canister. The bridge is damaged as Superman crashes into it, and so he and Supergirl need to abandon the fight to hold it up. The Zoners attack them again but Jimmy Olsen picks up the canister and draws the Zoners to him with the Signal Watch. He is able to open the canister before they attack him and they crash to Earth. Superman and Supergirl fly over and Jimmy asks what they were screaming, Kara replies it was "Kill us."

Superman miniaturises the Zoners and takes them to a hospital in Kandor. While he is there, a scientist called Drygur Moliom tells him that their probes which monitor the Phantom Zone mysteriously went black since the Brainiac Queen's attack on the Fortress. Superman calls a meeting of the Super-Family at the Fortress and tells them what is happening. He says that the Zone is changing somehow, developing from a twilight void into a place with physical dangers and where the prisoners can suffer real harm. He says he is going in alone to investigate, ordering the others to stay behind and defend against anything else that comes through. Supergirl beams him into the Zone, and he materialises in front of a band of armed men.
