Synopsis for "Phantoms, Part Five"

On Krypton, decades in the past, Superman wraps his cape around his chest to hide the sigil of the House of El and walks into the nearest city to find exactly where and when he is. When he gets into town, he sees a drone spin out of control and fly towards a bystander. He pushes the man out of the way, taking the blow on his midsection. The man he saves thanks him and helps him up, when suddenly the ground beneath their feet shakes violently. Superman realises he has travelled back to shortly before Krypton's destruction.

Back in the present in the Phantom Zone, Aethyr tells Lar Gand that the Zone will be "repurposed". Lar Gand asks what that means, but Aethyr simply orders the Val-Kon crew to seize him. Thew crew obey as Lar Gand yells at them to stand down and frantically asks Aethyr what he is planning.

Meanwhile at the X'rphoan Intergalactic Exposition, a band of Khunds blow up a wall and burst in. They demand the bones of Emperor Kharlax which the Exposition stole, and say that they are seizing the facility and its contents as penalty for the theft. Super-Man and Superboy consider just standing by as it isn't their fight, but quickly agree they can't let the Khunds hurt anyone or get their hands on the alien weapons stored in the Exposition. Kong tells the Khunds that he is willing to help them get the bones and then leave without a fight, but they attack him regardless. Conner says they can handle a squad of Khunds, but then they notice a fleet of warships outside.

On Krypton in the past, Superman realises his only chance of getting home and saving the people in the Zone is to recharge his solar batteries, but that is impossible under the cold red sun of Rao. He goes to his family's home in Kryptonopolis to ask Jor-El for help. The door is opened by Lara, holding baby Kal-El. Superman is momentarily overwhelmed by the sight but quickly pulls himself together. He introduces himself as "Klar-Ken" and asks to see Jor-El.

Jor-El suddenly bursts in, ranting about the Science Council and their short-sightedness towards the coming cataclysm. Lara calms him down and Clark tells him that he needs help with the solar batteries. He tells Jor-El that they are designed to hold tremendous amounts of energy but he can't charge them to optimum levels. Jor-El is impressed by the batteries and asks "Klar-Ken" to join him in his lab. While Jor-El scans the batteries, Superman notices a prototype Phantom Zone Projector. Jor-El tells him that he believes the Phantom Zone can be a refuge for Krypton's population, revealing his theory that Krypton will soon explode.

A representative from the Science Council called Ro-Zan bursts in to seize the Projector, as Jor-El has been developing it without approval from the Council. He also orders his men to take the batteries, and when Superman tries to stop them, they knock him unconscious. Ro-Zan places them all under arrest.
