Synopsis for "Phantoms, Part Nine"

On Earth, the Super-Family prevent an alien villain called Grax from crashing his ship into Metropolis and throw it into space, but as soon as they do they use up their last reserves of solar energy and fall out of the sky. Superman, returned from the Phantom Zone, flies in and saves them. He takes them as well as Natashia Irons, Mister Terrific and the Flash, to the Fortress of Solitude and fills them in on what has happened. Mister Terrific detects the device inside the Sun which Aethyr was using to drain its energy, still operating despite Aethyr's death. He tells Superman that if he destroys it then the process should reverse, but with his own powers in their current diminished state he may not be able to withstand flying into the Sun in order to do it.

Superman insists on doing so anyway and tasks Terrific, Natasha and the Flash to build a protective suit for him. Mister Terrific also tells Superman that destroying the machine will create a huge backlash of energy inside the Phantom Zone which will kill all the inhabitants. Superboy says that letting the prisoners die is no great loss, but Superman insists they must save everyone. He gives Jon and Supergirl the Phantom Zone Projector and tells them to take the Justice League's ship to a nearby planet with a red sun and evacuate the prisoners onto it. Suddenly they receive a call from the Bottled City of Kandor; Bry-Za, a representative of Kandor's Science Council and the daughter of Ro-Zan, tells Superman that they consider any release of prisoners from the Phantom Zone illegal unless they specifically grant a pardon to an individual. She admits that they can't stop him, but will banish him from Kandor for life if he follows through with his plan. Superman is upset to be cut off from the last remaining vestige of Kryptonian civilisation, but refuses to abandon the plan.

Supergirl and Jon Kent take the League's ship out of the solar system while Superman flies into the Sun in a suit of armour which Mister Terrific and Natasha built with the Flash's super-speed assistance. As he approaches the sun Superman calls Mon-El and tells him what he is doing, but as Mon-El is still poisoned he can't evacuate the Zone with the others. Superman suggests he retreat to a distant corner of the Zone and try to ride out the cataclysm, but Mon-El tells Superman not to worry about him and focus on saving the world. Their conversation is overheard by some prisoners.

Superman flies into the sun, the armour quickly burning off him. The Sun restores his invulnerability but not quickly enough, so Superman experiences terrible pain as he searches for Aethyr's device. Meanwhile, Jon and Kara reach the planet and Jon opens a portal to the Zone to allow the inmates to escape while Kara stands ready with an energy blaster to fight off anyone who tries to attack them. However, when they open the portal nobody comes through. Superman spots Aethyr's device and destroys it, and the Sun is quickly restored to normal. His powers rush back and he heals up. He sees dark spots inside the Sun up ahead and to his horror these resolve into the Phantom Zoners, freed and at full power.
