Synopsis for "Force Majeure, Finale"
The aliens introduce themselves as the Foreverers and cordially tell Superman that there has been a simple misunderstanding. They reveal that they are the ones who have been purchasing the supervillains' telomeres to extend their naturally short lives. In their minds, this was a simple business transaction between them and Mannheim, and therefore Superman should have no reason to object to it. They are surprised when, as Mannheim predicts, Superman says he is putting a stop to it and they attack him. Superman is able to fight them off for a while, even when they reveal they have gained the powers of the donors, but they eventually overwhelm him with numbers.
Mannheim sees Scorch considering helping Superman and orders her not to. He tells her that Superman won't hesitate to throw her in jail and that she owes him for everything; and threatens to tell the truth about Major Disaster if she doesn't do what she's told. Angered by this, Scorch opens a portal to Hell and tendrils of smoke erupt out of it and drag him through. Superman throws the Foreverers through the protal and their leader Ducorette follows them through, saying he will return when Superman is dead.
Superman tells Scorch that he wants the truth of what is going on and Scorch replies that she can't tell him, but somebody else can. She teleports them to a lake in Canada back on Earth, where Penny Booker is sat on a bench staring out over the water. Scorch tells Penny that the lie has gone too far and she needs to tell Superman the truth. Penny tells Superman that she had cut her father out of her life and told him not to come and see her until he was ready to be a man; and recently he had started sending her money and telling her he had finally gotten his life together. She was suspicious of this and had trailed him to find out what was really going on. She saw her father meeting with Scorch and Boykin and confronted them, accusing them of getting her father back into crime. Boykin had yelled at her, telling her that her father was nothing, and only good for the parts of himself he could sell. Enraged, Penny had screamed at him to shut up and created the earthquake that killed him. Major Disaster had Scorch teleport Penny away and taken responsibility for the killing to protect her. Superman asks Penny if she had wanted to kill Boykin and she admits that she doesn't know.
Scorch asks Superman not to tell anyone, as Booker fells that doing his daughter's time for her is the only way he can feel like he's taking responsibility for once. Superman reluctantly agrees, but makes Penny join the Titans as a form of penance. He later tells Lois about it and admits that he's not sure if justice is served by allowing Major Disaster to sit in jail for something he didn't do, even if it does give him a purpose in life. Lois tells him not to lose his hope, and that his greatest strength is his ability to care when nobody else does.
