Synopsis for "Solitude, Part One"
At the Daily Planet, Perry tasks Lois to investigate the fallout the current heat wave on Metropolis will have on the city's infrastructure, even though Lois was already assigned to an interview with scientists working on a special project in the Arctic. Lois agrees to the new assignment on the condition that she gets a raise and suggests that Clark gets her previous assignment.
The following afternoon, Clark takes a flight to the research base on Greenland and meets Drs. Addison and Pearce, two scientists working on a special device that will reverse the effects of greenhouse gases on the Earth's atmosphere. Unfortunately, their equipment is malfunctioning and the scientists have trouble fixing it. Clark suspects that the damage to the equipment could be an act of sabotage. Suddenly, the base is attacked by a pair of cybernetically enhanced polar bears, but Superman arrives just in time to stop them. Superman tries to take the bears as far from the base as possible, but the bears vanish into thin air.
The scientists wonder why the bears attack them and if they could be connected to the malfunctions on their equipment. They also wonder what happened to Clark, but suddenly he returns to the scientists and makes up an excuse of hiding and passing out when the bears attacked. Addison and Pearce believe that the damage to their equipment and the polar bears can't be a coincidence. Someone really doesn't want them to complete their project.
Later, Superman stands guard outside the base and is on the lookout for any suspcious activity in the surrounding areas. In that moment, a large robot emerges from the ground and attempts to attack the base, but Superman easily stops them, forcing the culprit behind the attacks, Kilg%re, to reveal himself.
