Synopsis for "The Speed of Life"

It is nighttime at the Kent farm and the Kents are preparing to test Superboy's speed. Superboy thought measuring his speed would be fun after noticing he has been flying faster with each passing day. Once Jonathan hits the timer, Superboy flies across multiple cities over the world and returns home in less than 25 seconds. Superboy is pleased with his result, but that excitement quickly becomes embarrassment upon realizing that his suit has been torn to shreds. Jonathan can only hope Clark was not carrying his wallet with him.

Martha, still laughing over Clark's incident, gives him yet another uniform, but warns him that this is the last one the Kents can afford until the farmers' market. Jonathan asks Clark about Mr. Blake and Clark replies that he is out sick, but that does not sound right to Clark because Captain Comet is superhuman, so he shouldn't get sick.

The next day, when Clark is checking his locker, he is visited by Lana, who asks him about his summer. Since Clark can't tell her that he is Superboy, he says that his summer was uneventful, unlike that of Lana, who traveled to Egypt thanks to her father's work as an archeologist. Clark musters the courage to ask Lana out on a date to the Sky diner, and she agrees. With the school day over, Clark can't believe he scored a date with Lana, so he struggles to find good clothes to wear for the date. Luckily, Marthan helps him and even advises him to just be the best version of himself.

Clark arrives at the diner before Lana does and nervously begins to wonder if he has super-pheromones and if they are the reason why Lana is interested in him. Once Lana arrives, Clark thinks that perhaps he should break things off with her before they get ugly. As they sit on the diner, Lana has something important to say to Clark, who replies that they are friends and she can say anything to him, but much to his surprise, she blurts out that she has an infatuation with Superboy. Lana has even made a scrapbook with drawings and pictures of Superboy and Clark is both relieved that he doesn't have super-pheromones and disappoined that Lana has feelings for his secret identity.

Suddenly, Clark listen to a telepathic message from Captain Comet. It's a request for help and Clark is forced to leave the diner but promises to pay Lana back. Superboy follows the message and arrives at a scientific facility currently under attack by Raze, the telekinetc terrorist that had previously wrecked the Expo of Tomorrow weeks ago, and this time, Raze has brought friends with him. The group calls itself "Avalon" and its members want to kill Doc Magnus before his work in the field of artificial intelligence cause problems in the future.

Superboy quickly rescues Magnus and goes on to engage Avalon, but the terrorists forcibly reprogram the robots built by Magnus to attack Superboy while Avalon pillages the facility's resources, like a mysterious green element kept in a lead container. Exposure to the green element causes Superboy to gradually become weak, so he is forced to keep his distance from Avalon and take out the terrorists with sneak attacks. Superboy fights through the pain and destroys Avalon's equipment while Raze is tased and incapacitated by a military squad led by General Sam Lane. Just as Superboy thanks the soldiers for their assistance, they surround him and point their guns at him while Sam orders Superboy's arrest.

Notes

  • The "element X" mentioned in this issue seemingly has nothing to do with the Fourth World's Element X (also known as the Tenth Metal), but is clearly just a way that Dr. Magnus labeled Kryptonite while it was still an unknown element.
