Action Comics #55 is an issue of the series Action Comics (Volume 1) with a cover date of December, 1942.
Synopsis for Superman: "A Goof Named Tiny Rufe"
Fading star cartoonist Al Hatt, creator of the formerly successful "Slapstick Sam" strip, retreats to his mountain cabin to dream up up some new comic strip ideas. The romantic antics of his young neighbors, Tiny Rufe and Maisy Day, seem extremely amusing to him, and Hatt develops a new strip based on these hill kids. It's a big hit.
But when Tiny and Maisy decide to get married, Hatt knows that this will ruin his comics. He goes to great lengths to break them up, using underhanded and even life-endangering tricks. Superman witnesses this, and thwarts several of the cartoonist's efforts, with some underhanded and life-endangering tricks of his own. Maisy and Tiny get married; Hatt's comic loses its popularity, and again he's facing failure. But Hatt's next idea is different and sensational; he pitches it to Perry White and Perry promotes it with billboards: "The adventure strip to end all adventure strips: Superman!"

Synopsis for Three Aces: "Aces of Fire"
One morning at the landing field, the Aces awaken to find that someone has painted playing cards on each of their planes. The paint turns out to be luminous, so that when the Aces go on their patrol that night, the Nazi aviators can easily spot them. Bill is shot down over the enemy airfield, but he is able to steal anther plane and help his friends shoot their attackers out of the sky. When they return to their landing field, one of the mechanics rushes over. He has luminous paint on his hands. The Aces slug the foreign spy and deliver him to their commander.

- As seen in the 5th panel of the 12th page of this story, Superman still has the power of "twisting his own plastic features" to turn his face into a copy of Tiny Rufe's.
- This is the last issue of Action Comics in which Americommando's real name is still spelled "Tex Thomson." After this, for most or all of WWII, he is called only "Americommando" or "Otto Riker." When his last name again begins to appear in the captions,[citation needed] it will have changed to "Thompson."
