Quote1 You know, I've been watching this show I don't know how many years, and Dick Clark never seems to age. You don't suppose he's one of Clark's "villains", do you? Quote2

Synopsis for "Walking Midnight"

Lois Lane is spending New Year's with the Kents in Smallville this year. Her husband, however, is doing a last-minute trawl of the letters people send to Superman, just in case he can get some good deeds in.

Two in particular stand out to him. The first is an Italian grandfather, suffering in his old age and fighting to survive, who has boasted that he will not die until he sees Superman fly past the hospital. The old man worries that he does not have long to live, and asks Superman to make a brief flyover so that he can at least die with dignity. Superman accomodates him.

The second is a Neo-Nazi youth who has come to Japan to set off a terror attack in a nightclub. He sent his letter because he believes that he and Superman will be equals in the new world the youth seeks to create. As the club counts in the new year, the youth sets of his pipebomb, causing a massive explosion... but no death, as Superman save everyone from the explosion, much to the youth's chagrin.

Back in Smallville, the Kents explain that when Clark was a child, Jonathan Kent had a New Year's ritual of checking every room in the house for noises, for faulty windows, or for damage. He called it "walking midnight"; one last checkup of the year. It was an example that Clark took to heart because he is doing the same thing now.

Clark makes it back to his family in time for the clocks striking twelve, as they prepare to celebrate the new year.
