Synopsis for "When Supergirl Played Cupid"

This story is reprinted from Action Comics #289.

In her guise of Linda Lee, Supergirl watches a sad movie with her adoptive parents, Fred and Edna Danvers. Feeling that her cousin Superman may one day miss out on the opportunity of meeting a good wife, Supergirl decides to play cupid to the Man of Steel. Her first attempt is to travel back in time to try and arrange a meeting between Superman and Helen of Troy, however in spite of Superman's super abilities, the people of ancient Greece take to Supergirl more ruining Superman's chances of impressing her.

Returning to 1962, and completely undaunted, Supergirl tries again by convincing Superman to travel to the distant future of the 30th Century to visit their friends the Legion of Super-Heroes. They meet with the now adult Legion members for their Christmas celebrations. However Supergirl's attempt to set Superman up with Saturn Woman fail as she is now married to Lightning Man.

Returning to their own time, Supergirl decides to use the computers in the Fortress of Solitude to find Superman the perfect mate. She located a super-woman named Luma Lynai from the planet Staryl. However when Superman meets her and brings her back to Earth, their courtship ends quickly when it turns out that Luma's powers are derived from her home planet's orange star (blue in some reprints as during those reprints Superman was weakened under an orange sun) and that Earth’s yellow Sun is poison to her, and so Superman returns her home. After three attempts, Superman suggests that maybe fate doesn't want Superman to get married right now.

Supergirl decides to give up, and leave Superman's love life to the whims of fate.

Synopsis for "The Secret Identity of Super-Horse"

This story is reprinted from Action Comics #301.

Superman recruits Comet (and Supergirl, who accompanies him) to the Sorcerers' World, to do a favor for Prince Endor, an old friend. Since Endor must ride a flying horse in a royal parade, and his usual steed, Pegasus, has lost his flying power due to a spell cast by the evil Lord Nomed, Comet substitutes for Pegasus as Endor's steed. In return, Endor casts a spell that causes Comet to become temporarily human when a comet passes through Earth's solar system. (As a man, Comet has no super-powers.) After he and Supergirl return to Earth, Comet becomes human again when a comet nears Earth, and becomes a rodeo star, taking on the name of Bronco Bill. When Supergirl is concerned over Comet's absence, Lena Thorul directs her to Bronco Bill, whom she senses is connected to Comet. Supergirl saves Bill from a bull and is rewarded with a kiss. Later, Bill transforms back into a centaur and is captured by horse thieves, but becomes Comet again, regains his super-powers, and crashes free. He reunites with Supergirl, who remains ignorant of his Bronco Bill identity.

Synopsis for "Supergirl's Cowboy Hero"

This story is reprinted from Action Comics #311.

When Comet sees Supergirl kissing Jerro and Dick Malverne on Valentine's Day, he longs to be able to romance her himself as a human. Accordingly, he travels back in time and petitions Circe to use a magic solution to turn him into a normal human without super-powers. She complies, but says that he will regret his decision. When Comet returns to 1964, his memory is affected by the serum and, before he can change to human form, he becomes involved with a thief called the Hooded Demon. Later, Comet becomes a human and regains his memory, but is mistaken for the Demon by the police. Still, Comet (as Bronco Bill) gets to kiss Linda Danvers and carries on a brief romance with her. Finally, when Supergirl's life is threatened by a Kryptonite meteor and when he is still threatened with false imprisonment, Bronco Bill asks Circe (who is watching him in the past on a crystal ball) to turn him into Comet again. She does, though the transformation is out of Supergirl's sight. Comet rescues Supergirl from the Kryptonite, and is gratified to hear her speaking romantically about Bronco Bill later on.

Synopsis for "The Great Supergirl Mirage"

This story is reprinted from Action Comics #256.

While secretly flying over Midvale, Supergirl begins to practice using her super-powers in secret so that she can be useful to Superman in the future. Believing that she is high enough to be unseen, she is unaware that fellow orphan Dick Wilson has taken her picture with an "eagle eye" camera lens. After finishing some super-feats she returns to the orphanage unaware that the snooping Wilson had noted that an essay that is due that afternoon is unfinished by Supergirl's civilian identity, Linda Lee. Realizing that the report is due, she uses her super-speed to finish writing the essay, arousing Dick's suspicions about her. Linda dismisses them by suggesting that what he saw was an unfinished draft.

Linda realizes that she now has her own version of Lana Lang. When Dick develops his photograph he realizes that he took a picture of a flying girl (and not a bird as he originally thought.) Suspicious that Linda is really this Supergirl, Dick tries different methods of exposing her secret identity. His first attempt involves using a dummy of himself being thrown off a cliff. It fails when Linda sees through his plot, but when she tries to use her x-ray vision to witness the spectacle, they accidentally set the dummy ablaze. Linda covers her tracks by bringing in a thunder cloud which strikes the dummy with a lightning bolt, eliminating Dick's certainty about Supergirl's identity.

His next trick involves using a set of prop dumbbells and real weights. He hopes to trick Linda into thinking that what is supposed to be a prop is actually a real weight, thereby exposing the fact that she has super strength. Also seeing through this ploy, Linda crushes a chunk of coal into a diamond and uses her super breath to secretly bore out the insides of the weights, making them as light as the props. Thus, she once again throws off Dick's exposé.

Finally, to set matters at ease, Superman (learning of Linda's plight) has a Supergirl robot built to cover for her and explain the existence of a "Supergirl" by having it put on a public show for the kids before departing.

Supergirl plans to marry Tor-An, even though her telepathic friends Comet and Jerro warn her that he is shielding his thoughts from them. Comet, Jerro, and Lori Lemaris summon Saturn Girl of the Legion of Super-Heroes from the future. She uses her superior mental powers to read Tor-An's mind, divine his scheme, and take Supergirl's place at the wedding in disguise. Tor-An is recaptured and later returned to the Phantom Zone.
