Synopsis for Genius Jones: "The Case of the Off-Key Crooner!"

In 1930, in the South Seas, the yacht "Dolphin" was wrecked in a storm and washed up on an uncharted island. The sole survivor was young Johnny Jones, and 743 books, from every corner of the world.

Ten years pass. Johnny lives on hand-caught small game, so grows extremely quick and cunning. And he reads all of those books, multiple times. Then one night a ship passes close by, and to draw its attention, Johnny burns his entire heap of books. The rescue is made, and Johnny ends up in New York City. Johnny is befriended by a small hotelful of actors, who set him up in business, in a booth, as the Answer Man, selling answers to questions for ten cents apiece. One customer, Mary Brown, has a stumper: she is a terrible singer, and can prove it, yet the night club owner Mr. Gaunt keeps pestering her to sing at his club. Why? The Answer Man promises to have the answer for her tomorrow morning, then closes up shop for the day.

On his way home that evening, Johnny has a mishap with some wet paint, so his new pals donate their old clothes to him, but all they've really got are old costume pieces, which Jones assembles into his new distinctive outfit. Thus attired, he ventures forth to the Amble Inn, to quiz Mr. Gaunt, who sics his bouncers on him. Jones calculates out a way to cause the bandstand and the band to fall over onto the bouncers, and with just a thrown glass of water, he brings this about. Under renewed questioning, and some shrewd observation, Jones deduces that Gaunt is running a gang of pick-pockets here in his own club, that the current singing mind-reader "Madame Pearl" knows too much about it, and that she's been scheduled to be murdered and replaced. Mary Brown looks just like Madame Pearl. Gaunt orders his goons to "take care of" Pearl, but Jones grabs her arm and sprints into the kitchen. Pursuing gunmen are scattered when he blows up half the room by dropping a sealed bottle of cold milk into a hot oven, but then Gaunt shows up with a brace of pistols. Jones kicks over a keg which knocks over a ladder which falls into an open refrigerator door which swings out to whap Gaunt into a wall, hard.

The next day the Answer Man has got the answer for Miss Brown, who pays him his dime and adds some smooches for a tip.
