Adventures of Superman #459 is an issue of the series Adventures of Superman (Volume 1) with a cover date of October, 1989.
Synopsis for "Solitude"
Superman heads to Antarctica reflecting about the last meeting he had with Emil Hamilton about Jimmy Olsen's health.
During that meeting, Superman is notified about the possibility that he is responsible for infecting Jimmy with an alien virus. After being analyzed thoroughly, Superman concludes that the Eradicator might be responsible for Jimmy's mutation. He then brings the device to analyze it in the lab, but Hamilton activates it by accident, triggering an explosion that destroys the lab. Superman manages to protect the professor, but one of the energy bolts strikes Jimmy, turning him into a stretching man again. Superman contains the device in his cape, shutting it off. Jimmy goes back to normal. Deeming it dangerous for human life, Superman wraps the device in a metallic sheet and fuses it, determined to get rid of it.
Thus, Superman is now in Antarctica, and he throws the Eradicator in a crater of ice. Unnoticed to him, the device activates itself at the bottom of the crater.
