Synopsis for "Face to Face With Yesterday"

During New Year's eve, Clark Kent visits Scott Brubaker, an old friend from his school days in Smallville, and remembers the tragic accident that resulted in Scott's coma.

Clark and Scott became friends during Football practice, at a time when farm boys and town boys rarely socialized. Eventually, Scott invited Clark, Lana Lang, and Pete Ross Ross to a party at his house. There was a lot of drinking during that party, and even Pete and Lana got drunk, but Clark was the only sober one due to his Kryptonian metabolism (which he wasn't aware of at the time). When the three farm boys had to go home after midnight, Scott offered to take them in his car, even though he was drunk. Worried, Clark tried to convince him to let him drive instead, but Scott insisted. The combination of alcohol and night drive ended most predictably: the car crashed into a truck and derailed. Clark, to his surprise, came out without a scratch and managed to take Lana and Pete from the vehicle, but by the time the ambulance arrived, Scott was already in a coma.

Back in the present, Clark enters Scott's room at the hospital and meets Mr. and Mrs. Brubaker, accompanying their son on his last few hours of life. Clark gives his condolences and explains the brief friendship they had and the guilt he feels for not stopping Scott from driving that night. The mourning parents tell Kent that he doesn't need forgiveness, and, even if he did, Scott would have offered it long ago. The reporter pays his last respects and leaves the hospital.

Back on the street, Clark sees a drunk couple getting inside a car, and, to avoid another tragedy, he melts the car's wheels before flying away.
