Synopsis for "Exposed!"

Superman takes down Metallo in front of the Daily Planet building, with many spectators watching, Lois and Jimmy included. As Metallo is taken away by SCU agents, Superman takes his leave and Clark reunites with his co-workers. All this is watched by a mysterious reporter hidden in an alley. The reporter returns to his apartment, where he has gathered a lot of information about Superman.

Clark, Lois and Jimmy file their Superman/Metallo story to Perry and go home. As Clark leaves the building, rain starts to fall and he notices the unknown reporter following him. Clark takes the man by surprise, but the reporter identifies himself as Carl Hobson, a freelance reporter for the Metro Star. He tells Clark he has found the truth about Superman.

Clark and Carl go for a cup of coffee in a diner, where they discuss what Carl has to say about Superman. Carl believes Superman is not really a hero, but a rather a selfish person who only stops villains so that the Daily Planet feature him in the front page and satisfy his ego. Disgusted by Carl's opinions, Clark leaves.

Later, as Superman stops a mugger from assaulting a woman, he thinks about Carl said. Although Superman never wanted to play favorites with the Daily Planet, he genuinely cares for the newspaper and its staff and it has never stopped him from protecting the city as a whole.

Meanwhile, Carl goes to Stryker's Island and conducts interviews with some of Superman's villains, such as Toyman, Parasite, Terra-Man and Atomic Skull, but they do not provide the information Carl wants. As soon as he interviewing Metallo, however, a riot breaks out with several prisoners attacking guards. In the confusion, Metallo grabs Carl and escapes the prison, seeing the benefit of having a hostage. In an effort to spare his own life, Carl offers to give Metallo all the information he has about Superman.

As Perry tells Lois and Jimmy to report on the prison break, Superman is already at Striker's incapacitating the prisoners. After the prisoners are rounded up, the guards tell Superman their most recent arrival, Metallo, is missing and has taken Carl as a hostage.

Carl has taken Metallo to his apartment, sharing his belief that Superman was created by the Daily Planet as a publicity stunt to increase their circulation. However, Metallo does not care about Superman's connection to the Daily Planet and moves in to kill Carl.

Meanwhile, just outside of Stryker's Island, Superman finds Hobson's phone. Hobson has left a recording on his phone that will help Superman find him and Metallo. Superman arrives at Carl's apartment just in time to incapacitate Metallo and save Carl. Still, Carl does not understand why someone as powerful as Superman would dedicate himself to help people and Superman says he has his gifts for a reason.

The next day at the Daily Planet, Clark is reading a Metro Star newspaper when Perry tells everyone that a new villain has surfaced. As Clark goes into action, he leaves the Metro Star newspaper at his desk. The article he was reading is titled The Day Superman Saved My Life: (While I Tried To Ruin His), written by Carl.
