Synopsis for "A Spectre Calls"
Derby Dickles is driving a mysterious passenger around, and on the way he sees Alan Scott. He calls to Alan but he doesn't appear to hear him. Alan Scott goes to a truck stop where gay men meet up for sex, looking for his friend Tommy, his first lover in New York. Another man, Mikey, tells him that Tommy is dead, supposedly by suicide, and was found drowned wearing combat boots. He also reveals that several others have also disappeared. The police raid the meetup and Alan flees by phasing through a nearby truck.
As Green Lantern he goes to check Tommy's body in the morgue and determines that he has the same burns that Robert did. As Tommy and Robert were known homosexuals, the police are not interested in investigating their deaths and have not even opened files on them, so in a moment of desperation Alan calls the Justice Society for help. The Flash joins him and tells him that the JSA plan to investigate even if nobody else will. He notes that Green Lantern is clearly personally invested in the case and Alan immediately becomes defensive; but the Flash obliquely reveals, without explicitly saying so, that he knows that Green Lantern is gay and it doesn't bother him. Alan asks him and the JSA to stay out of it, but the Flash tells him that the Spectre is already on the case.
That evening Alan finds the Spectre shaking down a gangster for information. Corrigan tells him that he is late, teleports them to the NYPD First Precinct records room and quickly finds a police file on Tommy. He tells Alan that the man he was interrogating is dating the precinct file clerk, and the mob uses her to keep track of any investigations that could come after them. She told him about Tommy's file, and that is what lead him to the First Precinct. Alan is confused as Tommy was killed in the Tenth, and they find that the file is empty. Alan says that the police haven't bothered to investigate because Tommy was seen as disposable, but the Spectre tells him that if the police want to make a case go away they don't create a file at all. The fact that a file was created and moved to another precinct suggest file tampering to cast suspicion on someone else. A man with the power to walk through walls and something to hide. He reveals that he knows Alan Scott's secret identity and tells him that someone is trying to frame him. Alan says the deaths are his fault and flies outside.
The same mysterious passenger gets into Derby Dickles' cab again and asks him to drive him to Greenwich Village. His eyes glow red, unnoticed by Derby.
The Spectre follows Green Lantern up to the roof. Alan says that he is a deviant and his sins are catching up to him, but the Spectre tells him that god's retribution is not for people like him, Tommy and Robert; but for the people who would judge and harm them like the killer. He emphatically tells Alan that he is not a sinner and Johnny's death was not his fault. The two hug and Corrigan assures Alan that he is a good person, and that if God did not want him to love another man then he wouldn't have been able to. The Spectre then gets back to business and tells Alan that whoever is behind the murders knows how Johnny died and about his relationship with Alan, meaning he was most likely part of Project Crimson. He suggests that they interrogate the people involved in the project, but when he refers to God as a "voice", it makes Alan think. He remembers how the Starheart said it would first bring death, then life, then power; and how he heard the Crimson Flame say that it would first bring death when Johnny died. He has a sudden hunch and tells Corrigan he has to leave. He tries to thank Jim for his words but Corrigan says he doesn't have to and to find the killer.
The passenger has Derby drive him to Alan Scott's neighbourhood. He gets out of the car and tells Derby to keep the meter running, saying he's not finished with him yet. The passenger, who is Red Lantern, breaks into Alan's house and goes into his study, where he pulls out a photo of the Project Crimson engineering team. Alan phases into the room and asks Red Lantern to look at him, calling him "Johnny". Red Lantern, revealed to be Johnny Ladd, backhands him to the floor and tells him "Время историй [Story time] my love".
