Synopsis for "Red Scare"
Green Lantern attacks Red Lantern, the power of the Crimson Flame drives him to extremes of rage. He tells Vladimir that he can't believe he's capable to the terrible things he's done but Vlad replies he has to. If he ever turned on his handlers they would take his powers away, and the Crimson Flame is the only thing keeping him alive. He reveals that he allowed the Red Labs to repeatedly kill him and resurrect him with the Flame. Eventually the scientists managed to sever the connection between him and the Flame, and he died again until weeks later the Flame revived him on its own. Alan begins to succumb to ill effects from trying to wield the Flame and Sokov tells him he needs to let it go before it destroys him.
Meanwhile, on the radio Derby Dickles hears a report that Green Lantern was in an aerial battle with an unknown opponent over Chelsea and seen falling out of the sky. He runs into Alan's house and finds it ransacked. He hears the voice of the Starheart coming from the Lantern and it instructs him to carry it up to the roof. The Lantern releases a massive blast of green energy that flies to Alan and hits him.
Alan suddenly finds himself in a train carriage with Jimmy Henton. "Jimmy" reveals that he is in fact the intelligence within the Lantern, introducing itself as the Starheart. The Starheart tells Alan of its origin, how the Guardians of the Universe gathered all the magic they could find and sealed it away in a star; where it gained sentience and became the Starheart. However, a fragment of it leached into the corona and, cut off from the rest of it, was driven insane with loneliness and rage and became the Crimson Flame. Eventually the Starheart formed a meteor and launched it into space, seeking the purpose of its existence. As it flew away, it dragged the Crimson Flame with it. They eventually crashed into Earth where the Crimson Flame lingered beneath the ocean and the meteor eventually became Alan's lantern. The Starheart tells Alan that it has purged him of the Crimson Flame and healed him, and that no time has passed in the real world while they were talking. It tells Alan that he needs to convince Vladimir Sokov to fight alongside him, as something far worse is coming and must be stopped.
Alan wakes up, his powers fully charged. Sokov challenges him to continue the fight but Alan tells him they have a bigger fight on their hands and flies out of the warehouse. Sokov follows him and they see crimson energy blasts firing up into the sky, which Sokov says should be impossible as only he has that power. Alan takes him to a newsstand and shows him a newspaper which reports a Soviet submarine washed up in New York with no-one aboard. Alan asks Vladimir what the scientists did with the Flame while he was dead, but Sokov doesn't know as it was classified.
Red Lantern's ring starts sparking and a huge crimson energy blast flies straight for them. Alan throws up a shied but they are still knocked down. A team of Soviet agents, all empowered by the Crimson Flame, stride towards them and introduce themselves as the Crimson Host, saying they have come to replace Red Lantern. The Crimson Host attacks the two Lanterns and destroy Vladimir's lantern. He says they need backup, and Alan replies he has no-one to call on. However, the JSA appear to help.
