Alan Scott is a reformed conman who wields an ancient artifact known as the Ring of Jong Li.
History
Alan Scott grifted a living by posing as a spiritualist, eventually incorporating a hot air balloon he called "The Green Lantern" into his act, claiming that by rising up into the air he could commune with the dead. After he was run out of Metropolis for fleecing widows he went west. On a train in Colorado he met Mrs. Silverton, an old woman transporting the Ring of Jong Li to San Francisco on behalf of Bruce Wayne. Alan was able to quickly charm Mrs. Silverton and she showed him the ring, revealing that it had been speaking to her in her dreams for thirty years. The League of Shadows, who were after the ring, blew up a railway bridge as the train went over it, derailing it.[1]
Alan miraculously survived unhurt, although everyone else on the train was either killed or mortally wounded. He found Mrs. Silverton pinned under wreckage and dying. She gave him the ring, telling him that it had chosen to save him, even when he admitted he was a fraud and a swindler, and then died. Alan was attacked by two assassins, but mystical green fire blazed out of the ring and burned them to death, much to his horror.[2]
Scott fled the scene in the Green Lantern and the ring lead him to Smallville, Kansas. He incorporated the story of the ring into his act; however Lois Lane, a reporter from Metropolis who knew of his previous scams, was in the crowd and demanded a demonstration of the ring's power. Alan was unable to get the ring to work and the people dispersed.[3] Alan considered trying to join a travelling Wild West show that was in town, but found the performers distasteful and returned to the saloon where he was staying.
In his room he was accosted by Batman, who believed he had derailed the train and stolen the ring. He tried to tell Batman what had happened, but Batman did not believe him due to his history of lies. Alan admitted he was tired of pretending to be something he was not, but insisted the ring had chose him and it was his truth, his duty, and his sector. The ring flared to life, blasting Batman through a wall. It generated a uniform around Alan and allowed him to fly through the air.[4]

Notes
- Alan Scott was created by Bill Finger and Martin Nodell, first appearing in All-American Comics #16. However, the Earth 19 version of Alan Scott first appeared in Batman: Gotham by Gaslight: The Kryptonian Age #3 by Andy Diggle and Leandro Fernández.
- The Ring of Jong Li combines elements of the Starheart and a Green Lantern Corps ring:
- It gives a similar speech to the Starheart, stating that "Three times shall I flame green. The first to bring death. The second to bring life. The third to bring power". Also its energy blasts resemble the magical green flames typical of depictions of the Starheart, while GLC rings are usually drawn firing simple beams. Additionally, like the Starheart it is associated with ancient China.
- However the ring generates a costume for Alan Scott resembling a Green Lantern Corps uniform, and he declares Earth to be his "sector".
Trivia
- When attempting to activate the ring, Alan Scott yells "Flame on!", the catchphrase of Marvel Comics hero The Human Torch.
