Alcippe was the Queen of Ephesus in Anatolia and leader of a race of warrior women.
History
After Ephesus was conquered by the Athenian prince Theseus, he took Alcippe with him to Athens, Greece as his second wife.[1]
Her life was made miserable by her husband, and even more so by Theseus's first wife, Phaedra. When her daughter Artemis traveled incognito to Athens to rescue her, she was violently attacked by the future king of Athens and left for dead. This drove Alcippe to the brink of madness. Artemis was alive and brought the army of Ephesian warrior women with her. Aided by the Irish women enslaved in Theseus' palace, Theseus was defeated and Alcippe was able to return home to Ephesus.[1]
However, Alcippe was pregnant and emotionally weakened by her husband's constant abuse. She believed she still needed him and returned to Athens with her son. This son would grow up to be a handsome young man who rejected the advances of Queen Phaedra, who then accused him of rape. Theseus, believing Phaedra, had his own son killed. Alcippe's fate after this is unknown.[1]

Notes
- This character or object is an adaptation of Alcippe, a character or object in traditional stories. These include, but may not be limited to religious texts, myth, and/or folk lore. More information on the original can be found at Wikipedia.org.
- The story of Alcippe and her son is almost identical to that of the Amazon Queen Antiope, sister and co-regent of Orithyia, and her son Hippolytus by Theseus, on whom they were based. A similar retelling was part of Antiope's origin and the founding of the Amazons of Bana-Mighdall in Wonder Woman (Volume 2) #33. In the post-Flashpoint era, the Amazon Queen Alcippe, also called Antiope, is the mother of Hippolyta.
