The Ultimate Man was a psychic enhanced human who attempted to force the Earth to conform with his delusional designs.

The Ultimate Man was once a well-meaning scientist who admired Superman and sought to artifically accelerate human evolution in order to create a vanguard of protective superior beings to watch over the planet. Using himself as the first test subject of his own evolution-ray, which functioned by use of cosmic rays, the Ultimate Man was changed both physically and mentally, his original purpose being warped by his altered mentality into a desire to control the human race. The Ultimate Man broadcast his ambition all over the world with a telepathic signal and made a demonstration of his power by causing a volcano to appear in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and generating an enormous tsunami as a side-effect. This drew the attention of Superman, whom Ultimate Man tried to distract from countering him by creating more disasters around the Earth. While Superman attended to these, Ultimate Man mutated himself again with his evolution-ray, becoming an emotionless, inhuman being with an oversized cranium. Ultimate Man's mind was warped even further, now planning to exterminate humanity and reshape the Earth into a staging ground for his experiments. He attempted to dispose of Superman by generating a Kryptonite beam that propelled Superman into a supermassive black hole at the rim of the known universe. However, Superman escaped this peril through a supreme exertion of force and returned to Earth. Ultimate Man trained his evolution-ray on himself a third time, intending to reach the acme of humanity's evolutionary potential. Superman decided that Ultimate Man could not be overcome in direct confrontation and devised a strategy to overload him with the energy of his own evolution-ray by focusing the beam through a giant lens. As a result, Ultimate Man was mutated into the fated final product of humanity's evolution, ironically a primitive ape-like being, and died from the stress put on his body by the transformation.[1]
