Dr. Alex Sartorius

Alexander Sartorius was born in Gotham City, New Jersey. His childhood was marked by the illness of his father, who suffered from cancer and eventually passed away, leaving young Alex in a state of deep sorrow. As an adult, Alex became a renowned and respected nuclear scientist, founding his own company, Sartorius Labs. Over time, Alex fell in love with and married Parvin, an immigrant from a country ruled by a fascist regime. Together, they had a son, with whom Alex often played a recurring game of pretending to fly. Driven by a desire to find a cure for cancer, Alex sought funding for his experiments. This led him to strike a deal with the sadistic gangster and businessman, Rupert Thorne, exchanging the results of his research for financial backing.

However, the agreement also involved handing over his findings to scientists in Bialya, a nation under a similarly oppressive regime. Alex's dealings with Thorne deeply worried Parvin, who feared something terrible might happen, despite Alex’s attempts to reassure her by explaining that his experiment could save countless lives from cancer, sparing others the pain he endured with his father and she with her mother. However, when the scientists in Bialya suspected Alex's research results were falsified, Thorne, fearing for his life, ambushed Alex and brutally murdered Parvin and their son, leaving Alex horrified and covered in the blood of his loved ones.

A radioactive transformation

Thorne's gang kidnapped Alex, who tried to escape but was ultimately dragged to his own laboratory. There, Thorne threatened him for failing to deliver results, prompting Alex to confess that he had deceived them because he refused to aid Bialya, a regime as oppressive as the one Parvin had fled. Despite Alex's tearful pleas, Thorne ordered his punishment, deciding to kill him by placing him inside his own nuclear chamber. As Alex begged for freedom, Thorne's henchmen activated the controls, exposing him to a lethal dose of radiation until the chamber exploded, transforming Alex into a radioactive metahuman with a skeletal body.[1]

Phosphorus' Criminal Empire

After surviving the accident, Alex, consumed by vengeance and rage against Thorne, made his way to the gangster's mansion, where Thorne was dining with his family. Alex interrupted the meal, mercilessly approaching Thorne and incinerating him on the spot, before sadistically murdering his wife and children as retribution for the loss of his own family. Fueled by his wrath, Alex continued his vendetta, slaughtering Thorne's henchmen and dismantling his criminal empire. Rising through the ranks of Gotham Organized Crime, Alex seized Thorne's position, wealth, and dealings, forming his own criminal gang and transforming into a dangerous and sadistic crime lord known as "Doctor Phosphorus."

For a few years, Phosphorus ruled Gotham's criminal underworld, spreading terror across the city with his ruthless tactics and radioactive powers. His reign seemed unstoppable until one fateful night when he decided to celebrate his dominance at the Ice Lounge. However, his revelry was cut short when he was ambushed by the relentless and shadowy vigilante, Batman, who captured Phosphorus, dismantling his criminal empire and bringing his reign of terror to an end. Phosphorus was subsequently incarcerated in the non-human wing of the Belle Reve Correctional Center, Louisiana.[1]

Assassination of Ilana Rostovic

Joining to the Creature Commandos

In 2023, Phosphorus was reluctantly recruited by the Director of A.R.G.U.S., Amanda Waller, to join Task Force M, nicknamed the "Creature Commandos," a black ops team composed of monstrous inmates from Belle Reve. Led by the gruff and skilled General Rick Flag, Sr., their mission was to travel to Pokolistan to protect their princess, Ilana Rostovic, from the threats of the Amazon witch, Circe, and her army of incel terrorists. Upon deployment at Poko Castle, Phosphorus made a desperate attempt to seize control of the nano-explosives, but he was swiftly defeated and reprimanded by Flag Sr., who forced him to reflect on his reckless actions.[2]

While Flag Sr. and Ilana were engaged in a private moment, Phosphorus attempted to prevent the royal guard, Alexi, from interrupting them. They were soon informed that their teammates, the Bride, a foul-tempered zombie, and Nina Mazursky, a kind-hearted amphibian, had left the castle. Flag Sr. ended his encounter with Ilana and set off with the team to the Frankenstein Mansion to rescue them.[3] However, they soon discovered that it was a trap set by Circe.[4]

The Commandos rescued Bride and Nina, then made their way back to the castle, which was under attack by Circe and her army. The team faced off against the magical forces, but during the battle, G.I. Robot, a militarized android from World War II, was destroyed when Circe appeared. Just as she was about to kill the princess, Phosphorus and his teammate, Weasel, a wild and anthropomorphic weasel, managed to defeat her, with Phosphorus incinerating her face.[4] After completing the mission, the team returned to Belle Reve. Phosphorus and his teammates were once again incarcerated, but their situation took a new turn when Waller's assistant, John Economos, assigned the Creature Commandos, under the leadership of Bride, to a new mission in Pokolistan: to kill Ilana, believing that she would provoke World War III according to Circe's vision.[5]

After landing in Pokolistan once again, the Commandos were transported by Alexi to the castle, but they were led into a trap by the Amethyst Knights, the royal guards of the castle, who tried to kill them to prevent the assassination of Ilana. Phosphorus and Bride managed to fight off and kill several pokolistani military forces, but finding themselves overwhelmed, the Commandos scattered to hide.[6] Phosphorus entered a house, where he saw pictures of a family that reminded him of his late family before he was discovered by the young daughter of the couple, Yana, with whom he formed a bond, seeing a reflection of his own son in her.[1]

The next morning, the Commandos successfully infiltrated the castle, planning how to kill Ilana, who had entered a lake. Bride and Phosphorus encouraged Nina to kill the princess, but when Weasel, who had formed a bond with Ilana, warned her of the attack, Nina was discovered and ultimately stabbed by Ilana. As the Commandos were cornered, they later learned from Waller that the princess was innocent. Despite this, Bride killed Ilana after uncovering her dark plans and left with Weasel and Phosphorus, who comforted her over Nina's death, while they returned to the United States. Afterwards, Phosphorus remained with the Commandos in a new lineup, continuing to carry out new missions for Waller.[7]
