Alexei Ivanov was a former Serbian special ops soldier and the security officer aboard the Andromeda.
History
During the Yugoslav Wars, Ivanov's unit ran a human smuggling operation sneaking refugees from all sides of the conflict across the Adriatic Sea into Italy for a hefty fee. As the war wound down and foreign peacekeepers took control of the Adriatic, smuggling became increasingly risky. Their boat was detected and, to prevent them getting caught trafficking, Ivanov's captain forced him to cut the line connecting their boat to the refugee's life raft and then sink the raft and allow the refugees to drown. This would haunt him for the rest of his life.
After the war, Ivanov became a mercenary. He was eventually hired by a top secret US military program known as "Project: Pressure" to serve on the experimental submarine the Andromeda. The Andromeda was sent to attempt first contact with what appeared to be a crashed alien ship, with Ivanov ordered to kill whatever was inside if it proved hostile.
The occupant of the ship turned out to be an ancient cosmic entity called the Darkworld. Ivanov sacrificed himself to destroy it by detonating the Andromeda's experimental black hole drive.
