Synopsis for "Mayhem in the Mile-High City!"
On December 10, 1941: In the shadow of the Lost Pyramid of Kukulkan, Hawkman and the Shining Knight rescue Shiera Sanders from sacrificial execution at the hands of the Feathered Serpent. Moments later they are joined by Hawkgirl, and fighting several dozen savage Mayans and well-armed Germans. During the melee, and just at the prescribed sacrificial moment, General Saukel gets knocked across the altar, and with some quick knifework, Kukulkan has performed the pagan rites necessary to take supernatural control of Mexico's ethnic groups of pureblooded Mayans, Toltecs, Olmecs, and Aztecs. Very soon, everywhere in Mexico, thousands of people of Aztec and Mayan lineage begin creating violent chaos. In the streets of Mexico City, these mobs are armed with modern weapons by their Nazi sponsors. Many Mestizo people are strangled or shot by their more racially pure neighbors.
At the center of the city, he ground trembles and splits, and a monstrous structure emerges, an Aztec pyramid, hundreds of feet tall. Throngs of brainwashed citizens, many now dressed in traditional tribal garb, begin marching up its steps. Johnny Quick, Firebrand, Atom, and Dr. Mid-Nite attempt to hold off the brainwashed Mayans on the giant pyramid, while Robotman and Liberty Belle break off and head to the Presidential Palace to protect President Camacho from assassination at the hands of a fake Feathered Serpent, wearing a powered exoskeleton, and a squad of Aztecs armed with submachine guns. Libby gets a chance to ring Mexico City's famous "Freedom Bell," and it energizes her just like the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia does. The Feathered Serpent tries to fight Liberty Belle hand to hand, and ends up thrown out a window, dropped to the plaza's pavement, and dead. His flying powers and super strength were fake. Things look good, until just then, the "real" Feathered Serpent flies past the window, enroute to an important meeting.
Greatly irritated, the self-styled Quetzalcoatl smashes his way through some decorative ironwork and into the German Embassy, where he confronts the Ambassador and his other Nazi "allies," and the terms of their agreement are angrily discussed. Hawkman, Hawkgirl, and the Shining Knight smash into the room through a second barred window, and make short work of the Axis agents, but the Feathered Serpent smashes his way out of the room, through another barred window, and escapes. The flying Serpent swoops in toward the central pyramid, where Atom, Quick, Mid-Night, and Firebrand are being mobbed by swarming savages. He dives in, surprise-punches Johnny Quick, and snatches Firebrand as a hostage, then flies to a much higher altitude. Undaunted by the height, she flares up and burns off his mystic wings and armor, dooming them both, but also breaking the spell that has enthralled the Aztecs and Mayans.
Sir Justin aboard Winged Victory swoops in and catches the falling Firebrand, while the Hawks catch the formerly-feathered Serpent, and discover that he too is a fraud, a mutinous German spy. They fly him over to the besieged pyramid, where the large crowd of Mexican citizens are just now snapping out of the Serpent's mental whammy, and are very freaked out to find themselves dressed up as Precolumbian Tribesmen, and in the middle of a fistfight with the Justice Society. While they regroup, the seemingly-unconscious Feathered Serpent rallies up and snatches a bomb out of his belt-buckle, with a 3-second timer, which provides plenty of time for Johnny Quick to snatch it away from him and relay it to Robotman, who throws the bomb way up into the air, where it explodes without harming everybody. And, as Robotman now informs Hawkman, Germany and Italy have, that morning (10 Dec 1941), both declared war on the United States, so that resolves the problem of who gets custody of this captured villain.
With peace and order restored to his country, the appreciative Mexican president thanks the All-Stars and holds a huge public rally to cheer them. Not long after that, Baron Blitzkreig departs from Mexico, to carry the war to the USA itself.
- The Feathered Serpent refers to film character Indiana Jones as an archaelogical "contemporary."
- The Feathered Serpent refers to himself as "Kukulkan," "Quetzalcoatl," and "Feathered Serpent," interchangeably.
- During the initial fight scene, General Saukel tries to lop off the Shining Knight's head with the Shining Knight's sword, but is unable to cut the Shining Knight's armor with it.
- During the final fight scene, Shiera abruptly learns, and not at first hand, that Carter has joined the Army.
