Alsind is an Umayyad prince.

When the Abbasids came into power, they executed most members of the Umayyads. Alsind's father escaped for a time but was eventually discovered and killed. Alsind was just an infant when he was sent to live with his alchemist uncle Alizar and disguised as a girl to prevent the Abbasids from murdering him.[1]

Alsind met Arak when he and his cousin Sharízad were captured by Lebanese villagers and offered as living sacrifices to a dragon. Arak intervened and through his actions and Alizar's alchemy, the beast was killed though Alizar was turned to solid gold.[2] Alsind and Sharízad traveled with Arak and Satyricus to the home of their uncle Abu Jahl in Damaskos. There they were attacked by followers of the Lord of Serpents. The group searched for the fabled sword of Gabriel, believing it would allow Alsind to reclaim his rightful throne but he and Sharízad were captured by the Lord of Serpents and his mother was killed after revealing herself as an agent of their enemy.[3]

The Lord of Serpents offered Arak a trade: Gabriel's sword in exchange for Alsind and Sharízad's lives.[4] After they barely escaped the Serpent, the group was captured by Barmak, vizier to Harun al-Rashid. Barmak kept Alsind prisoner in an attempt replicate his uncle's alchemy.[5] Alisnd escaped and unleashed Barmak's collection of mythological monsters. Barmak retaliated by stabbing Alsind in the heart before being turned to stone by the recently freed basilisk.[6] Arak used his newfound shaman abilities to heal Alsind of his wounds. When Alsind awakened, he discovered his host was Harun al-Rashid, caliph of the Abbasids and his sworn enemy. Alsind immediately attacked him though he was overpowered. When Sharízad begged for his life, the caliph arranged for them play a life-sized game of shatranj, with their lives in the balance. Sharízad outmaneuvered the Calipsh; the heroes won and were set free and Sharízad agreed to Harun al-Rashi's offer of marriage.[7]

Departing Damaskos, Alsind became a traveling companion of Arak, Satyricus and Valda on their quest to find Arak's homeland. In Serendeeb, a beautiful woman with butterfly wings crashed into their ship. Alsind promptly fell in love and helped her escape the king. Arak tracked them across the island and found the beautiful girl was actually part of a race of giant worm monsters that had been devouring the inhabitants of the island. Although saved from becoming dinner, Alsind mourned his lost love.[8]
