- I do not like, nor do I serve, humankind. I protect the forest and beings that live within.

Anhanga is the Brazilian god of death and the Underworld and the protective spirit of the forest.
History
As protector of all beings that live in the forest, he took pity on the beautiful but selfish and greedy warrior princess Andira, who, consumed by hatred and jealousy after losing a contest against her twin sister Juraci for the love of the handsome Avere, retreated to the forest and cried out in despair to any god that would listen.[1]
Anhanga answered her but, in order to give her what she wanted, he demanded innocent blood in exchange. Without instruction or advisement, Andira murdered Juraci and Avere's newborn son and, assuming that she could now claim Avere for her own, she was lynched and expelled from the tribe, seeking refuge again in the forest where she ran into Anhanga again. Seeing herself transforming into an alligator-like monster, she demanded an explanation from the god, who told her that he had done her the favor of removing her mortal flesh and revealing her true nature, and that was the blood exchange he demanded, which she misinterpreted. So he gave the now called Cuca a tome of spells and secrets from his wife, the goddess Tice, which would grant her great powers, but also curse her for all eternity, which she accepted.[1]
