Animal Man #18 is an issue of the series Animal Man (Volume 1) with a cover date of December, 1989. It was published on November 2, 1989.

Synopsis for "At Play in the Fields of the Lord"

In the Baker household, James Highwater attempts to explain the mysteries he has been following; his visit with Psycho-Pirate at Arkham Asylum, his experience of phasing out of existence. He discovers on his person a map of Arizona with a mesa circled on it.

Buddy Baker explains to his wife Ellen that he believes Mr. Highwater's experiences are connected to what he saw when he encountered the Yellow Aliens in Africa. He concludes that he must go with Highwater to Arizona, to solve the mystery. His daughter Maxine, however, is convinced that he will never return.

Together, Highwater and Buddy climb the mesa, and on top, they discover 12 buttons of peyote. Both are reluctant to take the hallucinogen, but feeling that its appearance is tied to their destiny, they take it. After a time of being exposed to the peyote's effects, Buddy is confronted by an animal spirit totem called Foxy. Foxy helps Buddy to realize that he is personally connected to the morphogenetic field—an all-pervasive force carrying the essences of every animal that exists. With this realization, Buddy finds that he can absorb the powers of any animal through the force itself, without being near the animal.

Furthermore, Foxy reveals that much of the strangeness in Buddy's world of late has been a consequence of a crisis. But he also learns that there is a second crisis yet to come. Despite these revelations, Foxy has more to show them.

Back at the Baker home, it's September 27th, and Ellen opens the front door to a smiling Mr. Lennox.
