Antaeus was a member of the New Olympians and fought the original incarnation of the Outsiders.
History
Antaeus had the metahuman power of superhuman strength. However, this power only worked if he was touching the surface of the planet Earth (usually through his feet). In this way, he was similar to the minor Greco-Roman god Antaeus. The origin of his powers is unknown, as is anything about his life before he began working for Gotham City crimelord Maxie Zeus.
Antaeus first became known to the general public when Maxie Zeus hired him and five other metahumans whose powers were similar to Greco-Roman mythological beings to assist him in staging an attack on that year's Summer Olympics, which were being held in Los Angeles. The resulting team was dubbed by Zeus the New Olympians.[1] The attack was foiled by the costumed super-heroes known as the Outsiders, who were led at that time by the Batman.[2] Antaeus and the other New Olympians were arrested, convicted and given prison sentences.
Years later, Antaeus (along with his teammates) was executed by Gog (William Matthews), who was on a killing spree of people claiming godhood.[3]
Powers and Abilities
Powers
Weaknesses
- Power Loss: Antaeus's powers were rooted to the Earth. If he were ever lifted into the air, his superhuman strength would disappear.
Notes
- Although this character was originally introduced during DC's Earth-One era of publication, their existence following the events of the 1985–1986 miniseries Crisis on Infinite Earths remains intact. However, some elements of the character's Pre-Crisis history may have been altered or removed for Post-Crisis New Earth continuity, and should be considered apocryphal.
